What are the main New York airports, and how do I get from them to central New York?
New York City has three nearby airports: JFK, Newark (EWR) and LaGuardia (LGA). Of course, if you’re not flying into New York City, there’s many other airports around New York that you can fly into depending on where you’re going. Other big airports in New York include Albany, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse.
John F. Kennedy International Airport / JFK: The JFK airport is located near Queens, which is relatively central to New York City. If you’re flying into NYC, JFK is a good bet. It’s about 20 miles from the city, and you can take the subway directly from the airport to connect with trains and stations throughout the city. Ubers/taxis are also an option, but they can get expensive during peak hours.
Newark International Airport / EWR: Newark is technically located in New Jersey, right across the border from New York City. Just 12 miles outside of downtown New York, it’s easy to hop on a train or bus into the city. You can also grab an Uber or taxi as well. Newark is a bit smaller than JFK, but there’s still plenty of flight options, both domestic and international.
LaGuardia Airport / LGA: The LaGuardia Airport is also in Queens and is the quietest of the three airports. From the airport, public buses run between the airport to Manhattan or Queens, from which you can also connect to the subway system as well. A ticket for a one-way trip on the subway and buses costs just $2.75, so it's definitely a budget-friendly way to get to the airport!
