As you might imagine, the best thing to do in Miami is go to the beach! Whether you want to visit some of the popular beaches, go surfing or snorkeling, or discover a hidden beach where you can get some R&R away from other tourists, Miami has plenty of beaches to offer. Yes! In general, Miami is quite safe to visit and you shouldn't encounter any major problems, as both the downtown and beachfront areas are typically safe. The main thing to keep in mind—as with any city—is to be aware of your surroundings (especially at night) and keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas (beaches included).

If you're looking for something slightly quieter, Coconut Grove (known as just “the Grove” to locals) is home to dozens of annual festivals and countless seaside cafes, bars and restaurants.

If you're staying in a central location that's home to plenty of beaches and restaurants like South Beach or Coconut Grove, you'll find the areas quite walkable and can get by pretty easily without renting a car, especially for shorter trips. However, if you plan to explore the wider city at all, or want to have more options, renting a car is a good idea.
