When is the best time to fly to Hawaii?

There’s really no bad time to visit Hawaii, but generally the best time to visit Hawaii is during the dry season, between May and October. Hawaii’s temperatures stay in the 80s all year long, so there’s only two seasons: rainy season (from November to April) and dry season (from May to October).

Keep in mind that the rainfall varies considerably even within a single island. For example, Kona (on the Western side of the Big Island) sees just a few days of rain per month, while in Hilo (on the eastern side of the Big Island) it rains on about 20-22 days each month! Since these two cities are just 1.5 hours drive away, if you find it rainy where you are while you’re visiting, you often have the option of finding a sunnier beach not far away.

Hawaii lifestyle and culture

Hawaii lifestyle and culture

As you might imagine, Hawaiian lifestyle is pretty laid-back and all about enjoying life and the spirit of Aloha on the islands! Once you arrive, you’re on island time—so don’t expect things to happen super fast or right on time, and take a deep breath and relax. Locals and visitors alike like to sit back, relax and enjoy time outside, on the beach or hanging out with family and friends. Hawaii has a rich culture and cultural traditions that consist of both native Hawaiian and indigineous cultures as well as influences from Japanese and Filipino cultures. Make sure to visit an authentic luau, eat some traditional Hawaiian foods and even visit a Hawaiian cultural festival to learn more about the native Hawaiian culture and language!

Exploring Hawaii on a student budget

Exploring Hawaii on a student budget

Hawaii is an island, meaning the vast majority of food, supplies and other items have to be imported—which can make things a bit more expensive than you might be used to. If you live in a big city like New York or Los Angeles, the prices likely won’t be shocking to you. Groceries are typically much more expensive in Hawaii than other places in the US, but the cost of eating out at a restaurant is similar to other major cities ($15-$30 for a meal out). Luckily, there’s tons of free things to do in Hawaii: beaches, hiking, volcanoes, waterfalls and more are all free! Likewise, staying outside of the main Honolulu/Waikiki area is a great way to save money on accommodations.
