Destinations to go down in LGBTQ+ history

The fight for equality has been a long one and it’s not over. Take a moment in your travels to honor these historic locations, remember those that came before you, and invigorate yourself towards all that stands ahead.

New York City

The 1969 Stonewall Inn riots in New York City was a catalyst for so much of the fight for LGBTQ+ equality in the United States and worldwide. What began as a police raid resulted in the creation of numerous organizations, as well as the foundation for Pride month and parades in June each year. Today you can visit the National Park and monument, as well as patron the actual Stonewall Inn bar.

Greece

In Greece you can literally visit the island Lesbos, the home of ancient Greek poet Sappho. If you need more than that for an excuse to add Greece to your travel itinerary, then stop in Mykonos, an established queer travel spot since the 1970s, or visit the world’s oldest erotic graffiti (spoiler: it’s gay) in Astypalaia.

San Francisco

San Francisco established itself as somewhat of a LGBTQ+ culture epicenter in the later part of the 20th century. Because so much was going on in the community, there are so many options for what to see today. Stop by the site Milk’s Castro Camera to see the mural of Harvey Milk in the window, walk along the Rainbow Honor Walk, or visit the GLBT Historical Society Museum.

Copenhagen

Denmark was the first country in the world to legalize gay partnerships in 1989. This gave homosexual couples nearly all the same rights as their heterosexual counterparts. Today the LGBTQ+ culture is so strong you can find pride events throughout the year and community spaces to gather in.

Malta

Considered one of the safest countries in the world for LGBTQ+ individuals, Malta really is a great travel spot. As an island country in the Mediterranean, they are small enough to not necessarily have a specific queer area to visit, but still have so much to offer in idyllic travel vibes.

Pride around the world

In the US, Pride and Pride Parades often take place in June in commemoration of the Stonewall Riots. But there are tons of events to experience all over the world all year long! If you want to fill your calendar in Pride, some of your options to attend are:

  • January and February: Melbourne’s Midsumma Festival
  • February and March: Auckland Pride
  • June: NYC Pride
  • July: Berlin’s Christopher Street Day
  • August: Copenhagen Pride
  • September: EuroPride
