So, you’ve got your vaccine—or you’re getting one soon—and you’re ready to plan a vacation ASAP. But where can you go that’s open to US travelers? Or better yet, where can you go that allows vaccinated travelers to visit without quarantine or testing requirements?

Thankfully, more and more countries are allowing vaccinated travelers to visit without restrictions, making travel easier! Mexico

Cancun, Riviera Maya, Los Cabos, Tulum and other popular Mexican destinations reopened to tourists over the summer. While land travel has been prohibited except for essential purposes since March 2020, air travel remains open. In order to visit, you’ll need to:

  • Monitor: You may be subject to health screenings and temperature checks upon arrival, and will be asked to quarantine or return home if they are symptomatic.
  • At the current time, no testing or quarantine requirements are in place for US citizens. Different Mexican states have different restrictions regarding curfews, masks, and so on.
  • Travelers returning to the US from Mexico will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Belize

Belize reopened to international travelers early in fall 2020. From world-class diving and snorkeling to colorful cities, it’s a great getaway from normal life. Vaccinated travelers need:

  • Vaccination: Proof of completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival).
  • Monitor: download a contract tracing app and undergo temperature checks at the airport.
  • Stay: book a stay for the duration of your trip at a Gold Standard hotel.
  • Travelers returning to the US from Belize will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Costa Rica

Currently, Costa Rica is a really easy place to travel to for vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers alike. And with nearly unlimited adventures and outdoor activities, it’s a great next-up for your bucket list! Regardless of your vaccine status, you just need to:

  • Health form: Fill out an online health form within 48 hours prior to your trip.
  • Insurance: Purchase (and provide proof of) travel medical insurance that will cover any Covid-related expenses you might incur during your trip.
  • Travelers returning to the US from Costa Rica will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Ecuador

Ecuador—another destination with incredible weather and diverse rainforests, mountains, deserts and beaches—has recently reopened for international travelers. Vaccinated travelers need:

  • Vaccination: Proof of completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival).
  • Health check: Random rapid antigen testing may be conducted at the airport and upon arrival. If the rapid antigen test is positive, the traveler must isolate for ten (10) days.
  • Travelers returning to the US from Ecuador will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

El Salvador

If you need another option for lush rainforests and tropical weather, El Salvador has you covered! Vaccinated travelers need:

  • Vaccination: Proof of completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival).
  • Travelers returning to the US from El Salvador will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US. Availability of testing in El Salvador can be limited on certain days, so make advance appointments to ensure you’ll have a test in time for your flight home.

Some health screenings may be done at the airport and some inter-state travel is restricted currently as well.

Guatemala

From rainforests and lakes to ancient history, Guatemala is now reopened for international travelers! Travelers who have visited the UK or South Africa in the past 14 days are not permitted to enter. Vaccinated travelers need:

  • Vaccine: Proof of completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival).
  • Travelers returning to the US from Guatemala will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Seychelles

The stunning Seychelles islands off the coast of East Africa are home to some of the most stunning beaches in the world, plus coral reefs, giant tortoises and rainforests. And, thankfully, they’ve recently reopened to travelers who can show proof of vaccination! Vaccinated travelers need:

  • Vaccination: Proof of a completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival)
    AND
  • Test: All travelers (even if you’re vaccinated) must show a negative Covid PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to travel. Currently, unvaccinated travelers from the US cannot travel to the Seychelles.
  • Travelers returning to the US from the Seychelles will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Can I travel to Europe once I’m vaccinated?

Europe is starting to re-open for vaccinated travelers! Although travel to Europe is still on a country-by-country basis, more and more European countries are beginning to waive quarantine requirements and travel restrictions for vaccinated travelers—meaning you can get back to cobblestone streets, European beaches and stunning natural landscapes in no time!

Iceland

Iceland is one of our favorite European destinations, in part because it’s so easy to get to from the US! From stunning waterfalls to the Blue Lagoon to the Northern Lights and epic scenery pretty much everywhere, Iceland offers a whole lot of social distancing and wilderness to explore. Vaccinated travelers need:

  • Vaccination: Travelers from a non-Schengen country (i.e. the US) need to show proof of completed vaccination before boarding your flight.
  • Health form: Complete Iceland’s health form prior to arrival.
  • Travelers returning to the US from Iceland will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

No additional quarantine or testing requirements are required for vaccinated travelers. At this time, unvaccinated US travelers are not permitted to enter Iceland.

Croatia

Croatia used to be relatively unknown, but now is a bucket-list destination for many travelers—and for good reason! From the famous King’s Landing in Dubrovnik to picture-perfect beaches and coastline to adventure and hiking gems like Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia has plenty of natural beauty to take in. Vaccinated travelers need:

  • Vaccination: Proof of completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival).
  • Accommodations: All travelers must also provide evidence that you’ve paid in full for accommodations for the duration of your trip.
  • Travelers returning to the US from Croatia will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Georgia

Georgia (the country, not the state) is located in Eastern Europe on the border of Europe and Asia. Home to the Caucasus Mountains, small mountainous villages and charming European towns make Georgia a must for anyone wanting to get off-the-beaten-path in Europe and explore the outdoors! It’s also a relatively inexpensive country in Europe to visit—perfect for a student budget. Vaccinated travelers need:

  • Vaccination: Proof of completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival, or the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine).
  • Travel form: Complete Georgia’s travel form before arriving.
  • Travelers returning to the US from Georgia will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.

Note that Georgia has restrictions on air arrivals. You must arrive directly from the US or another approved country (including your layover, if your flight has one). The approved transit countries can be found here.

North Macedonia

North Macedonia, in Eastern Europe (just north of Turkey) holds a lot of quiet European charm and few travel restrictions currently. You’ll need to follow local guidelines but there’s no testing or quarantine required.

Travelers returning to the US from North Macedonia will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US. More information on testing availability and requirements can be found on the embassy website.

Slovenia

Slovenia, a small country in the Balkans between Croatia and Austria, is a bit off-the-beaten-path. However, it has a wealth of beautiful cities and natural wonders! Lake Bled is one of the most famous destinations, but the ancient cities, castles, mountains and lakes scattered throughout the country bring plenty of European charm no matter where you go. Vaccinated travelers need:

  • Vaccination: Proof of completed Covid vaccination (with the second dose given at least two weeks prior to arrival).
  • Travelers returning to the US from Slovenia will need to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours prior to boarding their flight to the US.
