What are the main Florida airport hubs?

Florida is a big state with lots of cities, each with their own reasons to fly into. Generally, you’re going to want to fly into whichever city you are going to be spending your time in. However, if you plan to travel all around Florida, or to spend your time in a smaller town or city, look to fly into one of the major international airports - like Orlando, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or Tampa - as those are likely to have the cheapest flight ticket options. Other big airports around Florida include Fort Myers, Jacksonville, Key West, Tallahassee, and Daytona Beach.

Orlando International Airport / MCO:

The busiest and most popular of Florida airports, MCO is hugely popular for both domestic and international flights. With cheap flights from all of the popular domestic airlines in the US, you can find flights here so easily. Once you’ve landed there are lots of options for getting out of the airport. MCO is located about 25 minutes from downtown Orlando, meaning you can totally get a taxi or an Uber/Lyft. Depending on what you’re doing in the area, many of the hotels and theme parks in Orlando offer shuttle services, too. If you opt for the local bus system (the Lynx Bus), it stops at the airport every 30 minutes and will get you to downtown Orlando for $2.

Miami International Airport / MIA:

Miami airport is the perfect spot to fly to Florida if you’re looking for some sunny beach time or connecting onto a cruise. Just a few miles from downtown Miami, you can quickly get from the airport to the city or the beach (like in about 20 minutes). Get a taxi, an Uber/Lyft, a rental car, or just hop onto the free MIA Mover to get to the Miami Intermodal Center and take the Orange line to downtown Miami for $2.25.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport / FLL:

Just 45 minutes from downtown Miami, FLL can be a great option for getting to the same area for your beach trip. Depending on where you are flying from, there are regional flight options that can get you cheap flights to Miami by flying into FLL instead. Of course you’ll need to get the transportation from Fort Lauderdale to Miami after you land, so make sure you factor that cost into your decision on which airport to fly into. The local public transit has free shuttles that run from the airport to a nearby Tri Rail station - from where you can catch a trip as far south as Miami and as far north as West Palm Beach. The trip starts at $3.75 to get to downtown Fort Lauderdale or to Miami.

Tampa International Airport / TPA:

The Tampa airport is a great option to find flights for the Tampa Bay / Clearwater / St Petersburg area. With 21 airlines servicing roughly 80 nonstop destinations worldwide, TPA has roughly 300 daily flights. As a major airport, it’s likely you’ll find cheaper options to Tampa than to some of the other smaller airports in the area. The cheapest option to get from the airport to downtown Tampa is on public transit by taking the line 10 bus route for $2; the ride lasts about 30 minutes. Of course there’s taxi, rideshare, and car rental options too if one of those better suits your style.
