What are the main North American airport hubs?

Obviously, North America has dozens of airport hubs for you to fly into and out of, and since it’s such a huge region, your choice of where to fly in will be dictated by which areas you’re hoping to explore. In the US, New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C, Boston and Chicago are main airport hubs for many domestic and international airlines.

In Canada, Toronto and Vancouver are popular hubs, and in Mexico, Cancun or Mexico City are go-to hubs. Regardless of whether you’re flying domestic or international, flying into bigger hubs often means more flight options and (sometimes) cheaper tickets. Be sure to check main hubs and smaller, regional airports to make sure you get the best deals!

When is the best time to travel in North America?

North America is a massive region, so there’s not one best time to visit. It all depends on where you want to go and what you’re hoping to do. For example, northern parts of the region (i.e. Canada and the northern US) get quite cold in winter months, with temps well below 32° F for most of the winter. However, in the southern areas of the region (think: Los Angeles, Florida and Mexico), the weather stays warm pretty much year-round.

Flights during the winter holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s) are typically more expensive, as are summer flights. Whatever you decide, do some research into the climate of the specific area you’ll be in before you go so you know what to expect.

Why do American students love traveling in North America?

North America is a great place for students, with over a million international students choosing to study abroad somewhere in this region, and loads more traveling here for fun. Whether you’re studying, skiing, chilling on the beach, exploring historic sites or amazing cities, there’s something for everyone here.

North American universities and campuses

North America has some of the best and most well-known universities in the world, including Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Princeton and more. Although these are North America’s most well-known, they’re certainly not the only schools available! Schools like New York University, University of Toronto or University of British Columbia and Northeastern University are known for having large international student populations. They’re also located in some of North America’s best cities. Keep in mind though that North America has literally hundreds of universities to choose from, so you could choose to study pretty much anywhere across the region.

North American lifestyle and culture

The lifestyles and cultures across North America vary: while in Mexico, you’ll find a vibrant and unique culture influenced by a variety of ancient civilizations, in Canada, you’ll find that the culture has had lots of European influence. Most people speak English, although be prepared to learn some Spanish if you’re heading to Mexico or Central America. Many Canadians also speak French. While the lifestyle and culture varies across North America, you’ll probably find many similarities to what you’re used to at home when you travel. If you’re not sure about something, don’t be afraid to ask a local.

Exploring North America on a student budget

Like cultures, expenses can vary widely across North America. While big cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York are known for being expensive, other parts of North America (like some places in Mexico and many smaller cities in the US and Canada) are much cheaper to visit. Even if you’re visiting a big city, exploring on a student budget is possible. Look into getting a student discount on hotels or use Airbnb, find free things to do and eat at smaller, local restaurants to save money on food.
