The main airport for Miami is the Miami International Airport (MIA). It's located just a few miles from downtown Miami so you can be at the beach or strolling downtown in about 20 minutes once you leave the airport. From the airport, you can hop on the MIA Mover, an automated train to head downtown from the airport, or grab a taxi or a rental car.
In addition, the Fort Lauderdale airport (FLL) is only about 45 minutes away from downtown Miami. If you're looking for a more regional flight, you can sometimes find cheap flights to Miami if you fly into FLL.
Miami is easily accessible from most major US cities, which is good because it's a great place for beach weekends as well as being a gateway to many cruises and flights to the Caribbean and Mexico. The most popular airlines for flights to Miami include American, United and Frontier, although of course there's plenty more options to choose from as well.
Due to the fabulous sunny and warm weather year-round, there's hardly a bad time to visit Miami! If you're wanting to avoid crowds on the beach, then off-season—between November and February—is your best bet. Early fall can also be a cheaper time to get tickets. Summers in Miami can be hot and humid—although of course, with so many amazing beaches, that's hardly a problem.
Students love Miami because, well, who doesn't? Endless days on the beaches and nights exploring the hip downtown and trendy nightlife options means you'll be able to have plenty of time to relax but you'll never be bored either.
Miami universities and campuses
What better way to spend your college years than right by the beach? Beach study sessions (or napping sessions) will be way better than cramming in the library! Thankfully, Miami (and the surrounding areas) are home to a number of universities, the largest and most popular of which is the University of Miami. The university is known for having a robust selection of majors and courses of study, while also offering plenty of extracurriculars to round out your college experience.
Miami lifestyle and culture
Since Miami is so close to the Caribbean, you'll find plenty of Caribbean and Spanish influence in Miami, which is a huge win for the art, culture and street food scenes. From plenty of art events, museums and music, there's always something to do! If you're on a budget, check out the street art downtown—the Wynwood Walls are a go-to spot! You can also try some delicious foods and flavors with Caribbean influences, like arepas, a Cuban sandwich, chicharron and more.
