Independence Day is fast approaching! Where will you celebrate the birthday of the United States? If you’re dying for a 4th of July getaway for the holiday, and wracking your brain for a unique experience, look no further! Whether you want a capitol celebration, small town U.S.A., or a Revolutionary experience, we have it all!

4th of July is only 10 days away, so grab a cheap last-minute flight, a hotel room and get going!

What better place to celebrate our nation than in the Nation’s Capital, Washington, D.C.? A large and festive parade begins at 11:45am at Constitution Ave and 7th Street, filled with bands from around the country! If you want to celebrate the other cultures represented in the U.S., head to the National Museum of the American Indian and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Of course, we know that patriotic music is a necessary precursor to fireworks. Whether you attend “A Capitol Fourth” on the Capitol’s West Lawn (The National Symphony Orchestra, The U.S. Army’s “Pershing’s Own”, Barry Manilow, Hunter Hayes, and many more), enjoy the incredible acoustics of the Annual Independence Day Organ Recital at The National Cathedral, or the Navy Band Sea Chanters, the official chorus of the U.S. Navy, also performing at The National Cathedral—make sure to partake. Don’t forget the many festivals, foods, and, of course, FIREWORKS on the Mall, to finish your day with a bang!

Let’s bounce across the country to Travel & Leisure’s No. 1 town to celebrate the 4th: Flagstaff, AZ! While not a hub for the Founding Fathers or Revolutionary history, it pulls out all the stops for people of all ages and stages who want to celebrate a National Birthday with festivities, art, and nature (The Grand Canyon, Baby!). They have art walks, parades, fireworks, and more (see a full schedule of events)! Plus, if you’re a Goonies fan, they’re playing it on the lawn.

Next up…The Big Apple! That’s right, the place where dreams are made, boxes are bigger than apartments, and Macy’s puts on the best celebratory festivities (Fireworks…Parades…they do it all)! If you plan on catching the light show, find your spot by 5PM! TimeOut New York recommends these spots for the best views! But, that’s the evening…here are some things to fill your day. Ever wanted to eat your weight in Nathan’s Hot Dogs? It’s tradition—why not take part! Are you a history buff? If so, you need to check out this walking tour of Revolutionary War New York! There are so many other great things, check them out here and plan a weekend to remember!

Alright, grab your dog, grab your best friend, and make your way to Bend, OR. If you’re wondering why, it’s because they have a July 4th Pet Parade (they warn against cats, rabbits, and aggressive dogs—I guess that means your pet kangaroo can hop right on through)! Other fun and unique festivities include: a pancake breakfast, the 1st annual pie eating contest, traditional games (bean bag toss, 3-legged races, and sack races), and their firework spectacular, to cap off the day!

If you want classic, “small town, U.S.A.”, come to the mountains, because Clifton Forge, VA’s 6th Annual Stars and Stripes Celebration is the place to be. Decked out in red, white, and blue, waving the Stars and Stripes, enjoy a patriotic parade through Historic Downtown, selections from The Declaration of Independence, and, at the Masonic Amphitheatre, music, food, art, and a cardboard village for the kids to paint. In the evening, the C&O Historical Society will open its grounds for picnicking, trains, music, games, and, what we all wait for, the fireworks display! If you want to make a weekend of it, check out the local “Southern Hospitality”, as well as the best tavern in the state!

Whatever you do and wherever you go, celebrate and stay safe! Happy Independence Day!
