1. Beautiful beaches

With over 270 miles of coastline, Puerto Rico offers an abundance of beaches with water activities such as snorkeling and surfing.

If you’re looking for a remote, isolated strip of sand, we recommend Flamenco Beach, which is located off the mainland on Culebra Island. This beach was designated as the second-best beach in the world by the Discovery Channel due to its secluded horseshoe-shaped bay, mile-long golden sand beach and calm aqua waters.

For students, we recommend staying near Isla Verde and Condado for their proximity to Old San Juan. These beaches have reputations for being popular spots to see and be seen and they have hip, party vibes.

2. Natural attractions

Puerto Rico has endless options to explore its natural wonders, from ziplining, to horseback-riding, to driving an ATV, you’ll be sure to find an activity that suits your interests.

Just over an hour drive from San Juan is Camuy River Cave Park, a 268 acre cavern system located in northwestern Puerto Rico. Take a guided tour of these caverns made out of limestone rock formations and see the creatures that inhabit the caves, including bats. The system was carved out by the third-largest underground waterway in the world, which explains the enormity of some of the main caverns. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes that have a good grip to prevent from slipping.

If you want to check out another natural wonder, you should venture over to El Yunque National Forest, located in northeastern Puerto Rico. This national forest is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System and has a wide variety of wildlife and plant species.

One of the most popular natural attractions in Puerto Rico is the Mosquito Bioluminescent Bay in Vieques. A biobay is a rare and fragile ecosystem consisting of microorganisms that glow when any object in the water comes splashing through. If you kayak through these waters on a dark night, you will see fish swimming by appear as streaks of neon green light and the oars of your kayak come out of the water dripping neon green.

3. Happening nightlife

Did we mention that even though Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, the legal drinking age is 18? That alone is reason to celebrate at one of San Juan’s upscale clubs, lounges, and bars.

Our top pick is Club Brava, located in the lobby of El San Juan Hotel & Casino. This happening nightclub has a huge dance floor, several bars, a VIP room and outdoor terraces spread over two levels. Another option for vacationers is Señor Frog’s. This bar will have you partying with friends in a conga-line and dancing on stage all night long. Be sure to dress to impress for any club or bar as policies are strict and sometimes you won’t get in wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

4. Affordable

Puerto Rico is one of the most affordable destinations in the Caribbean during Spring Break since it is not overcrowded during this time. Cheap, fast food is abundant which keeps cost down for Spring Breakers looking for a snack between rounds of drinks.

Accommodations are also relatively cheap compared to other destinations. The Beach House is one of our favorite hidden gems located right on Isla Verde Beach, nestled between the grand high rises. The hotel only has 17 rooms, but what it lacks in size it boasts in charm and amenities including outdoor daybeds, free wi-fi, a seafood and Caribbean restaurant, and personal training for $10 on Saturday mornings.

5. Easy access

One of the best perks of traveling to Puerto Rico is its proximity to the US. Flights are only a few hours depending where you’re traveling from and U.S. citizens don’t even need a passport! StudentUniverse offers great low fares on flights to and from Puerto Rico, so start planning your tropical vacation today!
