Is spring really on the horizon? Today Hindus around the world are celebrating one of their most significant holidays, the spring festival, or Holi.
Holi is an ancient celebration and is also known as the festival of colors or festival of love. This holiday is to honor the Hindu god Krishna, and the legend of Holika and Prahlad, which has an underlying message that good always defeats evil.
The celebrations include a lot of music and dancing around and A LOT of color! Participants will run around throwing multi-colored dry powder over each other. Most of the celebrations take place on the street or around temples. There are even people who have water guns and water balloons full of dyed water. And how do they top off this joyous day? By sharing delicious sweets among loved ones of course.
The celebration is prominent in India, Nepal, and other South Asian countries but you can now find Holi festivals in the U.S. and in Europe. There are big celebrations held in cities like New York, Boston and Los Angeles.
Enjoy this joyous day and Happy Holi!
