I can’t believe Thanksgiving is here! It’s okay though, the pumpkin spice latte is back, sweaters are soon to be needed, and the weather is going to be wonderful. It also means it’s time to go to New York City and see the Macy’s Annual Thanksgiving Parade!
In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual parade presented by all the US Macy’s businesses. It all began in 1924 and lasts about three hours, airing on live television on Thanksgiving morning. There are various balloons, dancers, performers, and Broadway actors and actress perform their favorite songs.
If you’re thinking about going, here are 3 best tips to help you enjoy your Thanksgiving Parade experience.
1. Arrive Early for seats
I can’t express how many people show up to watch the parade. Over 3.5 million people line up all around New York City to catch a glimpse of all the floats and the lineup. Although the parade doesn’t start till 9, some people are ready and sitting with their chairs from 6:00 AM. Many people take their own folding chairs to be comfortable instead of standing. When I went, my friends and I managed to get to the parade around 8:30 and had to squeeze in with people to be able to go to the front. Being 5’3 is a tough task in the crowd.
2. Bring Warm Clothes
If you’ve ever been to New York in the winter, you’ll know it probably gets chilly. No, not chilly, but freezing. Make sure you have enough warm clothes that are comfortable. The Weather in New York has always been known for its cold Thanksgiving Days. Being from Texas, the cold isn’t really my friend. During the day I had on three pairs of socks and still felt the wind getting the best of me. Bring gloves, hats, scarves and warm jackets for everyone.
3. Choose a good spot
Many people recommend watching the parade on the Upper West End. This is where the parade starts, which means it ends early as well. It usually takes about an hour and thirty minutes, while if you’re all the way to the end, it will last 3. Try to avoid sitting near the Macy’s store, many people try to sit there, since it’s where most cameras are located. Columbus Circle is also good choice, since it is close to the middle of the route.
New York City is a stable of the US and offers a memorable site during the holidays. While the temperatures near freezing, it is worth it to bundle up, grab a hot chocolate, and enjoy all the wonders. Stay a few weeks in the city that never sleeps and enjoy the cold weather. It will be a trip to remember.
