Cinco de Mayo is celebrated by millions of people across the United States, but how many of them actually know what the celebration is all about?

1

While we understand the importance of overindulging on tortilla chips and guacamole, sipping on frozen margaritas, and wearing your best sombrero, the holiday officially commemorates Mexico’s unexpected victory over France at the Battle of Puebla. The Mexican army won the battle on May 5th, 1862 despite being smaller and ill-equipped.

2

One common misconception is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence day, when in fact, that holiday falls on September 16th. Cinco de Mayo is really about celebrating the Mexican way of life rather than about remembering the battle itself.

While Mexicans celebrate in a low-key manner with political speeches and battle reenactments in the state of Puebla, the holiday is widely celebrated in the United States. Celebrations include parades, dancing, festivals, traditional Mexican food, drinks, Mariachi bands and more.
