This isn’t the Rockies, the Alps, or the Himalayas, but the northern Appalachian Mountains offer their own unique ski and board experience. Check out some of the best winter destinations perfect for all you ski bums and snow bunnies!

Killington, VT“Beast of the East”
The self-titled “Beast of the East” covers seven mountains and has everything from glades to cruisers, and black diamond mogul fields to a giant super pipe. Just down the hill is a great town of restaurants and shops and plenty to keep you entertained for days. Definitely one of the biggest, and now with the most runs, in the northeast (around 162+ trails)!

Whiteface, NYFor the Olympian in you
Located near Lake Placid, New York, Whiteface was the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. Get a bit of history by visiting the nearby sites or challenge yourself on the downhill giant slalom course. We’re not sure which will take your breath away more: the spectacular views of the Adirondacks or the biggest vertical drop in the northeast at 3,100+ feet.

Jay Peak, VTFor glade-lovers
“Ski the Longest, Steepest and Snowiest Glades & Chutes in the East,” says Jay Peak. This mountain won’t let you down as they also boast the most natural snowfall in the northeast! Glades like Vertigo, Everglades and Timbuktu (my personal favorite) will keep you coming back despite the soar thighs. Make sure you check out the great views of surrounding Vermont and the Canadian border.

Mad River Glen, MAFor back-in-the-day skiing
Still stuck in the mid-twentieth century, Mad River Glen is a great mountain to forget about those pesky snowboarders (unless you are one, in which case you’d better switch your board for skis). The single chair lift from 1948 was recently replaced, but this small ski-only mountain still has a wonderful charm and community.

Stowe, VT For the skiing socialite
Becoming increasingly trendier and fancier, Stowe is definitely the place to show off. If you are willing to spend a bit more, this is the place to come for great skiing and a great time. Similar to traditional European resorts, Stowe is the great place for families, friends, or a romantic getaway. But don’t wait too long to plan your trip, as this is a popular mountain resort and gets crowded quick!
