On October 19th I was lucky enough to join about 10,000 people in Madrid’s first ever Holi Run. The Holi Run is similar to the Color Run in the States and Canada if you have ever participated in one of those races. This was my first experience with a race like this and it definitely won’t be my last! The race was held outside of the city and the sheer volume of people walking towards the starting line was very impressive, not to mention some of the awesome costumes people had decided to dress up in.
The Holi Run began around 11 a.m. when we were all swept from the starting line in large groups – pumped up and already covered in colorful powder. As we ran the 5k we inevitably had to stop at each color station – I didn’t think throwing powder around and getting covered in it in return could be so much fun. A note to future participants: Don’t forget your sunglasses. It’s a lot easier to color-bomb your intended target if you can actually see them! Bringing a scarf to cover your mouth isn’t a bad idea either. I didn’t have one and the taste of the powder isn’t particularly pleasant.
