New Year Resolution: Travel More!

Yep, 2011 is long gone and what better resolution for the New Year than to Travel More? And we know you’re going to stick with it, after all you’ll find all the great deals on StudentUniverse :)

When the time comes, we want you to be prepared. So we’ve gathered the Best Travel Tips our students have sent us and put them below to make sure you make the best out of your travels in the New Year!

Check them out!

  1. Get off the beaten path. Explore less crowded places & talk to locals. Create your own path!

  2. Try everything! New food, new languages, new experiences. Whether it's squid, Swahili, or skydiving, you'll be very glad you did.

  3. Carry a notebook and pen! This way you can write down new words, foreign foods and the moments you don't want to forget.

  4. Look for volunteer programs in the places you are staying. Not only is it rewarding, but it's a great way to meet natives and learn about a culture from within!

  5. Don't exchange money beforehand. Take a debit card and withdraw cash from a local ATM in that country. Saves tons on fees.

  6. Go for it! Everything good and bad is a learning experience and they all make great memories! Be flexible and learn to laugh at things when things don't go as planned.

  7. Try and learn a few words in the local language. Even if you mess up, most people are gracious and appreciate the effort!! They often are more willing to help you!

  8. Forget what you think you know about the place(s) you're traveling to. Let yourself learn everything firsthand -- then keep a journal, so you always remember your experiences the way you did when they happened.

  9. Invest in a pack towel and a small lock. The towel is super lightweight, small and dries fast. And you always need a lock when staying in hostels. Two small things that make a big difference!

  10. Stick to nothing except your budget and your friends! The only plans you really need to keep are the ones that will make your belly full and your memories last! Other than that, be flexible and adventurous with your time.

  11. Be happy! Yep, be happy with the way things happen even if they don't happen as planned. Many obstacles can and will get in your way while traveling and it is important to not let it stop you from enjoying yourself, so don't be afraid to let go.

  12. Pack a big scarf wherever you travel. A scarf can be used as a neck warmer, pillow, blanket, hairband, belt, beach cover up, towel, knapsack and handkerchief!

  13. Travel in the now. While photos and videos of your travels are amazing things to have, don't spend your whole experience staring through a lens. Pictures may last longer, but nothing can ever replace a moment entirely. Travel in the now, not in preparation for the future.

  14. And... last but not least!

  15. Smile! There are only 6 universally recognized facial expressions, and smiling would be the best one. Wouldn't you agree? :)
