Dining in Spain
Some of the best seafood in Europe is served near the coast of northern Spain. There be sure to try scallops in a tomato and brandy sauce (Vieras de Santiago) and the classic Basque dish, crab au gratin (Txangurro relleno). Empanadas are little savory pies stuffed with cod, shellfish, or pork. You are in luck again with the Mediterranean cuisine of Spain’s east coast. Go for grilled seafood, Suquet (a special Catalan stew made of wine, saffron, and shellfish), and tasty paella stew. Southern Spain is the land of lemons, oranges, sherry, and olives. Enjoy cool gazpacho, baked and fried fish, and caramel custards. Given Spaniards’ love for delicious fresh seafood and cured meats, as you can see, vegetarian students are at a slight disadvantage restaurant-wise, though potato-based dishes like patatas bravas and tortilla espanol are always great. Try the vegetarian restaurant Plaza de la Paja in Madrid for fresh vegetarian concoctions and ever-popular gazpacho.
