Things to Do in Amsterdam

Exciting Amsterdam is the Cool Capital of Europe. It’s ok to smoke a joint in public -- Where else can you do that? Students from all over Europe come for weekend fun and it’s a perfect stop on your backpacking tour. Or better yet, come for study abroad in Amsterdam, because the city has two major universities. Amsterdam, the capital and largest city in The Netherlands, has become Europe’s fifth busiest tourist destination even though it’s actually a pretty small city. Amsterdam is located on the water. It attracts tourists and especially student travelers mostly because it’s known as a liberal city as well as a place of tolerance and diversity. With the availability of cheap student airfares and numerous budget hotels and hostels in Amsterdam, students who visit Amsterdam get to enjoy what the city has to offer: a rich culture, history and arts, sports, amazing historical architecture like museums and canals, beautiful cobblestone streets, sumptuous food, and of course, nightlife. Students from all over the world enjoy young, trendy, vibrant Amsterdam. With one of the busiest airports in the world (Schiphol) there are plenty of student flights available to Amsterdam and in fact from Amsterdam to most anywhere in the world you want to go!

Whether you’re on spring break or study abroad in Amsterdam, there is really a ton of stuff to do. It is legal for coffeeshops to sell small quantities of dope. Several such coffeeshops in Amsterdam include Rusland, Dampkring, Kadinsky, Abraxas, Siberie, and Greenhouse. Several Two of the main tourist attractions in Amsterdam are the museums and the numerous canals, making it known as “the Venice of the North.” There’s no bad time to visit the city, though July and August have the finest weather. Jump on one of Amsterdam’s canal buses; it’s a fun way of getting around the city. For students who are into the arts, visiting the famous Van Gogh Museum, where the largest collection of paintings by the world-famous artist Vincent Van Gogh is exhibited, is really exciting. Other must-sees include the Anne Frank House and the Heineken Brewery, the latter located at Stadshouderkade 78. Another popular and wicked cool thing to do is biking at night: That’s when Amsterdam looks the best.

Canal cruises are very popular in Amsterdam, with each one usually lasting from one to two hours. The best companies are the Canal Bus, Lovers Canal Cruise, and Amsterdam Jewel Cruises. Other places like the Canal Company rent two-seater canal bikes that are a cheap way to get away. Smoking cannabis in public is something enjoyed by most tourists who are otherwise prosecuted at home. This doesn’t come without a warning- cannabis is still technically illegal in the Netherlands (although all authorities look the other way), and you should use your better judgment such as only smoking where it would be appropriate to smoke a cigarette, such as not in a house or around children. Buying and eating cannabis is commonly available in most coffee shops, with Grey Area and The Bluebird the best places to go. For all you cinema people Amsterdam features the Rialto Cinema, with all films shows in their original language with Dutch subtitles. They have late night and classic showings, and are only a short walk from the Albert Brouwery.
