What Makes Student Tickets Different?

Companies have, for years, marketed to students by offering student discounts. We’ve all been college students or know someone who was/is a college student, so we understand that college kids don’t have a lot of money. They’re taking out loans for tuition, paying for room & board, buying books, paying lab fees, paying for meals; all of those things cost money, a lot of money, which leaves students with limited funds for anything else.

Students may have limited money but they still have an appetite to travel and explore the world. That’s where StudentUniverse.com comes in. We partner with major airline carriers to offer student discounts on airline tickets; along with hostels, car rentals, airline tickets, etc.

How are student tickets/fares different from retail fares, which you would find on any other travel website? Well for one, they’re cheaper. We negotiate with the airlines directly, on behalf of college students, to get the lowest fares possible. Student tickets are refundable, with a fee; retail fares usually are not refundable. Student tickets to Europe give you the ability to travel to a destination and stay for up to a year, which is perfect if you’ve decided to make studying abroad a part of your college experience; retail fares do not allow you to stay for such a long period of time.

Some student tickets we sell allow changes to be made to your ticket for as little as $50 fee. A low fee like that is difficult to find on another travel website. If you purchase a ticket to travel internationally, a lot of our tickets allow a “stopover”. A stopover is landing in a city that is along the way to your final destination and staying for a few days to explore and visit. It’s like getting two cities for the price of one! Student tickets have been created for you! Get out there and explore!

You say that student tickets are cheaper, but that’s not always the case… What tickets are typically cheaper? When should I check out your site?

  • StudentUniverse said:

We agree that student tickets aren’t always “cheaper” in every market as, on occasion, airline sale fares may undercut the student fare. However, keep in mind the total value of the student ticket (such as minimum/maximum stay, change and cancel fees, advance purchase) and not limit the comparison to simply a price point. Lastly, remember that when purchasing a student ticket from StudentUnvierse.com it is not necessary to purchase an ISIC card.

What you guys are doing is great. The tickets are pretty cheap even if I book last minute. So keep up the good work.

Can my kids travel on student tickets? They are 2 and 8… Sadly, I am now a working adult ;0 but I still love to travel.

Do you include High School Students as well or only college students?

I am 32 years old and have arranged to study in Australia (have my visa). So I am now a student, looking for an economical flight to Australia.
Does my age make a difference if I want to book with you?
Are your services for US residents only? (Can Canadians book with you?)

Why are some of the tickets applicable to students only from ages 17-25? Shouldn’t all students benefit from studentuniverse.com?

  • Jeff said:

I would like to know what proof of “student” status is needed in order for the student tickets to be valid. Will an ISIC be good enough?

  • Mariel Weston said:

I was just wondering if the fares could possibly apply to high school students as well. I am planning a trip with my friends who are still in high school and I found cheap tickets that I would like to share with them.

  • Yesim said:

I have a question. If a an individual registers and then purchases tickets as a student, can they still get the tickets for a future time
(i.e., 8 months down the line) for a time that they will no longer be a student date?

I work for StudentUniverse, and would be happy to answer a few of the questions on this forum.

*Kids-unfortunately, our student tickets do require that EVERY person buying them is a student. What we normally recommend is to compare fares for the same flights, and purchase your ticket through us, and then purchase your children’s fare directly through the airline. Airlines frequently give discounts on their children’s fare, but you need to call them directly. Once all fares are purchased, you can contact the airline or StudentUniverse to get seating together.

*High school-sorry, unless you’re taking a college course somewhere, too, we’ll need to wait a bit before we can get you on one of our student deals. If you’re traveling as part of a group (12 or more), our groups department does handle high school student groups

*Age requirements-some airlines do have age requirements, but many more do not. We’ve designed our site so that you’ll only see fares you’re eligible for, so log-in and search, and any fares you see will be good for students of any age

*Canadian citizens, and students from every country, are always welcome to book our flights

*In terms of proof, we always look to your school first: if they say you’re a full or part-time student, then you are all set. If for any reason we cannot get this information from your school, which is the exception, then we would contact you directly to get proof. We look for things like your student ID, class schedule, etc. Unfortunately, we do not accept ISIC cards, which means you don’t have to “pay” for the privilege of getting our student deals

*In terms of timing, the important thing is that you are a student when you book your flight. You can book a flight for a time (post graduation for example) when you are no longer in school, so long as you were a student at the point when you bought your ticket.

I hope this helps, happy to answer more questions….happy travels!

  • Christian said:

What do you consider “faculty?” I am a high school teacher looking to go overseas for the summer, but I haven’t found anything on your site that tells me if I am eligible for the great discounts…

  • Annie said:

I am a high school student but will be taking a college class in may. If, while enrolled in the college class, i book a flight for 2010 when i will not be enrolled in my college class, will i still recieve the student discount? Thank you!

  • Kate said:

Unfortunately, high school students and teachers, unless they are part of a group of 12 or more passengers, are not eligible to purchase from StudentUniverse.

  • Kate said:

You are eligible as long as you are currently enrolled and taking classes.

  • Kate said:

Are you eligible to purchase a ticket? If you are a student or faculty member for a government accredited college, community college, or university of 2-4 years, yes! You do not need to be attending school full time, as long as you are currently enrolled and taking classes, you are eligible.

  • Alastair said:

Do medical students qualify for this? Our excess spending money is pretty much non-existent. This seems like a great idea! I wish I had known about this a couple years ago when I flew to Europe.

  • elana said:

How does my dad buy a ticket for me. He is faculty at UCLA so he qualifies and I just graduated so apparently I don’t…

    Is that possible?

  • Atle (author) said:

    Elana,

Only enrolled and verified college students/faculty qualify for our cheap student airfares. I am afraid your father will not be able to buy a ticket for you.
