Things to do in Cairo
The key to sightseeing in this city is that there is a distinct and fascinating history behind all of the sights. The Pyramids of Giza are a fixture in the landscape of the remarkable city. Built between the years 630 BC and 1530 BC these amazing pyramids weight each at 2.5 tons. It is easy to see why this landmark draws millions of visitors every year. A Falucca on the Nile is a nice break from the city air. Here you can rent an ancient sailing boat by the hour and enjoy soaking up the sun. Islamic, or Medieval, Cairo is where the majority of the ancient mosques are located. The Mosque of Mohammed Ali, the nineteenth century ruler, can be found here as well. Don’t miss out on the Citadel or the Pharaonic village while here too.
Nightlife in Cairo
Although Egypt is a Muslim country, there are several establishments which serve alcohol to tourists. Though you will see many locals sipping soft drinks all night. After the sun goes down, people come out and are ready to party. The city is actually busier in the night then it is in the day. Many clubs have areas for sitting and sipping drinks as well as belly dancers for entertainment. Check out some places with cushy pillows that act as chairs. It sets a nice ambiance tone. Remember to keep your ID with you at all times just for safety’s sake. Also ask the local bars for local Egyptian beers to try something new and interesting.
Colleges and Classes in Cairo
Cairo is located in one of the oldest countries in the world. There are so many amazing classes you could decide to take here. The best part of studying abroad in Cairo is the ability to take some ancient Egyptian or artifact classes and then actually go see them. Art classes are also a nice idea for those interested in some ancient art. The museums here have some pretty amazing things to see. How cool would it be if you knew some history behind these amazing masterpieces? Finally it might be fun to look into taking an ancient Arab language class. Something that you would have over your friends back home!
Travel From Cairo
Alexandria is the largest, closest city nearby Cairo. It could be done in a quick day trip, however might be more enjoyable as a weekend adventure. Take in a museum, castle or artifacts, and the beach of course. The Mediterranean is at your fingertips here. Sip on a cocktail and watch the sun set before you come back to Cairo. Fayyoum is another fun place to see in Egypt. Close to Cairo, it is easy to get to and inexpensive enough for study abroad students to have a good time. You can take either a bus or taxi here and see some of the earliest ever recorded pyramids in Egypt. If wanting to get out of Egypt, Israel is very close to Cairo. It is in fact closer than some other places in the country. Check out the dead sea and some incredible historical buildings and ruins you could never find anywhere else. Just remember you are in the oldest civilized place on earth. So you better take time to see some of the amazing artifacts here.
Cairo Study Abroad Tips
- Visit in the cooler months, usually between November and March, since the summer can be very hot.
- Bring a high SPF sunscreen since there is limited shade.
- Ask your hotel concierge to recommend a taxi because the local taxi drivers are known to overcharge tourists.
