Day Activities
For spring break, South Padre Island rolls out the carpet to college students and welcomes them in for a week of activities, parties, club hopping, and lots of sun. Artists such as Cartel, Paul Wall, Ying Yang Twins, and Chamillionaire are some examples of past performers. Trojan sets up a lounge right on the sand with all sorts of fun games and activities. In case that’s not enough there is also scuba diving, beach buggy rentals, fishing, golfing, horseback riding, kite boarding, surfing, daily trips to Mexico, and plenty of water sports. Groups may rent sail boats to take out on the water for a luxuriously relaxing day.
Nightlife
Spring Break is the best time to come to South Padre Island because there is constantly something going on. There are some places in particular that will let you party all night long. The Padre Island Brewing Company serves its own specialty beer with lots of laugh and great food. A few crazy clubs include Coconuts, Chaos, Quarterdech Club, and Club Pelican West, which has two levels, two bars, and two huge dance floors. Chaos is actually six clubs under one roof surrounding a large concert stage. Island Oasis is a cool sports bar with live entertainment, pool, darts, and Foosball. As long as you stay near the beach, you will be all set for the night. And don’t worry, cover charges are fairly rare so you can party wherever, whenever.
Travel Tips
The currency in South Padre Island is the US dollar. Since it’s relative closeness to Mexico however, having some Mexican pesos might be a good idea for when going to Mexico for a day trip. The nearby port town, Port Isabel, allows you to escape the tourist trap and experience some local life. South Padre Island has only one main road: Padre Boulevard, which is part of Texas State Route 100. ‘The Wave’ is South Padre’s free public bus line. It goes up and down Padre Blvd. and hits all the great tourist spots. Did I mention it’s free?
