Spring Break in Puerto Rico
If Mexico’s a bit far (and pricey) to go for spring break then there are other alternatives. Puerto Rico may not be thought of as the hottest spring break destination, however it has a life all its own; and a party that never end. There are many upsides to spring breaking in Puerto Rico as well. For starters, you don’t need a passport to get there, since it is technically US territory. Also, the drinking age is 18, so you can finally relax and have some fun here and you don’t have to worry about all the members of your group being of the regular US legal age. The weather is perfect and the beaches are lovely. There are generally less crowds, and things like hotels and activities don’t cost as much as say Cancun or Panama Beach City. Round up a group of friends, grab a towel and a drink, and make Puerto Rico your spring break destination–you won’t want to miss it.

Activities
Go horseback riding along the beach. Or hike one of the many breathtaking trails and passages in the more secluded indigenous forests. Fishing, kayaking, scuba diving, windsurfing and parasailing are just some of the super fun activities on this island. Balnearios is a recreational public beach. There are camping facilities, cabins, and villas for rent. Flamenco Beach on Culebra Island is a lot of fun too. You should also visit the Seven Seas beach, Luquillo beach, and Las Croabas, where you can rent kayaks. Red and Blue beaches are some of the most fabulous beaches in the carribean and are definitely worth a visit. If you are looking for something else to do besides beaching it, there are some pretty cool forts. San Felipe del Morro and San Cristóbal are absolutely worth the visit. Also check out Camuy River Cave Park, Luquillo Beach, and Luquillo Beach. Or take a day trip to The Bacardi Rum Distillery–it is the largest in the world, and is only a fifteen minute drive from San Juan. Plus you get free drink vouchers, and a cool factory tour! This is one of the most popular tourist attractions. If you are here for spring break you might as while take advantage of all that Puerto Rico has to offer.
Nightlife
San Juan is where most of the party’s at in Puerto Rico. Rum drinks, hot salsa dancing, and nights that don’t end until the sun comes up. The best clubs and bars run along two streets in Old San Juan. San Sebastian Street is more casual, while other places require that you dress to impress. In San Juan, the mojito is the drink of choice and is often offered as a specialty at bars. Here they will actually take the time to make them fresh for you. And they taste incredible. All bars and pubs are non-smoking so you will see lots of people crowding the streets to have a drag. Before you go out, you should stop by a local store and pick up some Medalla Light, a locally brewed beer. It is only sold in Puerto Rico and makes for a great pregamer drink.
Travel Tips
Puerto Rico has a history of minor crime issues, which is no secret. However there are ways to stay safe. The majority of the crime is concentrated in the metropolitan cities such as San Juan. As long as you stick to groups and stay in tourist areas, you will be more safe. Local police know to patrol these areas more heavily because tourism is such a large income for Puerto Rico. What you should be careful of is theft and pickpocketing. Keep your valuables to a minimum while here and don’t draw too much attention with flashy personal items. The streams and ponds near cities are not safe for drinking and swimming, however you should be fine near the rain forest streams. Health services are wide spread here and easy to get to. All cities, including San Juan, will have good services available to you.
