Washington DC, known to most locals as “DC” or simply “The District”, is the Nation’s Capitol. History is alive in The District with it’s monuments, gardens, and memorials. Things to do in Washington DC
Washington DC is separated into four different sections: Downtown, North Central, West, and East. The National Mall, Smithsonian and other museums, the White House, Kennedy Center, George Washington University and Chinatown can all be found in the Downtown, easily accessible via the “Metro”. If music and dancing is your thing then be sure to hit up the North Central where there is always live music and clubs, the perfect combination for a wild spring break! There is also boutique shopping, tons of restaurants, nice hotels, and jazz on U Street. For all the animal lovers, the Northwest side of Washington DC is home to the National Zoo, as well as more nightlife and fine dining, the National Cathedral, most of Washington DC’s high-end shopping, and Embassy Row. History buffs should make sure to check out the East side where they can find historic landmarks like the Capitol Building, Library of Congress, and Washington DC’s “Little Vatican” around the National Shrine.

Nightlife in Washington DC
Washington DC is home to some of the best clubs and bars as well as great music. If you’re for an edgy, young, diverse crowd then the Adams Morgan’s area is for you, located around 18th street, Dupont Circle, and Logan Circle. If an older, low-key crowd is your style then check out the clubs near U Street and 14th Street in Shaw. Around there you can also find great live jazz in almost every bar and restaurant. For more music and college crowd hit up Georgetown University and check out one of the city’s most prestigious venues, Blues Alley. Try to avoid the Downtown area at night and Foggy Bottom. The clubs are pretty lame to put it mildly. Also, Penn Quarter is one big tourist trap so watch out for that. Washington DC is also home to different and odd clubs as well such as the Palace of Wonders which features vaudeville dancing, sword swallowing bartenders, a pirate bar, and a “museum of oddities”.
Dining in Washington DC
Washington DC is known for its Ethiopian food and is one of the best cities in the world to find such cuisine. Ethiopian food is usually spicy and eaten with your hands. It’s also proper to feed your date making it a fun experience for couples. The best place to find food is in Shaw which includes many different options including Washington DC’s own Little Ethiopia. Essentially anywhere you headed in Washington DC, they will be great restaurants with great food. Restaurants usually post their menus outside the restaurant so walk down some streets and see what you like best!
Shopping in Washington DC
The District features a range of shopping options from upscale fashion boutiques to cart vendors. For those with a little extra coin the Chevy Chase shopping district is the place to go with stores like Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue, Gucci, Dior, and Versaci and is easily accessible from the Friendship Heights Metro Stop. Union station includes a variety of retail options including clothes, shoes, and local gifts. Head to Georgetown for a beautiful area to shop in with so many brand name stores. To find Washington DC apparel like postcards and t-shirts go anywhere in the Downtown. There are always many street vendors selling knock-off purses sunglasses wallets and more, so check those out to get some great deals!
