San Jose

Things to do in San Jose
There are of plenty of things to see and do in San Jose. One of the most popular places in the city is Santana Row, a “European Village,” home to many swanky shops, restaurants, a hotel, and great nightlife. If you are in the mood for some ancient history, stop by the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, one of the largest collections of ancient Egyptian artifacts in the country. You can also attend a San Jose Sharks NHL game or enjoy a night at the Improv Comedy Club or the American Musical Theater. There are also many annual events in San Jose such as the San Jose Jazz Festival, the largest free jazz festival in the world. There is also a huge celebration for Cinco de Mayo, by far the biggest in the Bay Area, and one of the largest in the world.
Nightlife in San Jose
San Jose has plenty to offer in terms of nightlife. Santana Row is a new hotspot for action day and night, but if you want to venture to other areas, there are plenty of venues throughout the city. If you are looking for an upscale night out be sure to visit The Fairmont Lounge, an upscale piano bar, or Dive Bar, an upscale cocktail lounge. If you’re in the mood for some music, check out JJ’S Blues, one of the best places to hear live blues and the only place to feature live music every night. Other places worth a visit are VooDoo Lounge, and Toon’s Nightclub. Finally, stop by Hookah Nights for coffees, teas, snacks, and hookahs to be enjoyed both inside and out.
Dining in San Jose
There is an enormous selection of food to be found throughout San Jose. If you are looking for great Mexican style seafood, look no further than Taqueria Corona. They also have a great selection of domestic and Mexican beers. Gordon Biersch Restaurant Brewery is a great place to go downtown and it is moderately priced. They serve great fusion dishes and feature very tasty home brewed beers. Hawg’s Seafood is another winner and has been voted best seafood restaurant in the South Bay. Finally, if you are dining on a budget, head to Sonoma Chicken Coop, an informal restaurant with great food–most entrees cost less then $10! Plus they brew their own beer as well.
Shopping in San Jose
Santana Row is a great place to visit if you are in the mood to shop. There are also a lot of other places to shop throughout the city. Valley Fair is one of the largest and best shopping malls in northern California, and if you are into malls, it’s worth your while to check out Oakridge Mall as well. Tropicana Shopping Center is also a great place to shop with many stores and a great representation of San Jose culture.
San Jose Travel Tips
- San Jose is a driving city, so to take full advantage of your visit, make sure to rent a car.
- There are many sites and towns outside of the city within a short drive. Just one of many: take a trip to Stanford University and the beautiful town of Palo Alto.
- With little rainfall, be prepared for a lot of sun–the area receives over 300 sunny days a year, with moderate temperatures year-round.
