Things to do in Salt Lake City
Being in the Wasatch Mountains makes this place one of the best in the world for all types of winter sports like skiing and snowboarding. The 2002 Winter Olympics were hosted here and the area is nice to visit. Come during the winter and take advantage of the incredible snow. Most resorts don’t need to make snow during December/January. Thanks to the lake effects, the snow here is light and powdery, perfect for hitting those terrain parks. Brighton, Alta, Deer Valley; they are all located here. You can easily spend your entire visit at these resorts. A good suggestion is to look into purchasing a group pass for a few days. There are believe it or not some non-sport related sites as well. Temple Square is a famous part of Salt Lake City. It is the most visited place in all of Utah. This is the famous Mormon faith homeland, so to speak.
Nightlife in Salt Lake City
Though this place is known for their killer steaks and onion rings, the Red Rock Brewing Company is a great place to relax and hang out at the bar after hours as well. There are so many types of beer it will make your head spin, a great selection of on tap brews, and great finger-picking snacks. On weekends bars close later then during the week, obviously. Although during ski season and on breaks this changes a bit. Expect to not stay out too late, as with cities like NYC or L.A. because people here are a bit more relaxed and therefore don’t party hard until 4AM. The overall attitude is a little slower so that is why you won’t be finding crazy nightclubs all over the place.
Dining in Salt Lake City
Trolley Square has a good selection of various restaurants. When you go out for dinner try Fry Sauce. It is a combination of ketchup and mayonnaise. Dip french fries, burgers, you name it in it. It’s a very tasty sauce and served at most all restaurants here. Another good idea is to reserve a night to go to a local restaurant. There are so many and it is easy to stay away from the major chain to really enjoy some good Utah food. Go to Porcupine Pub & Grille. They have local beers on tap and a great appetizer selection for groups. Bohemian Brewery is another great choice for cool, casual cuisine with a nice easy-going atmosphere. And then of course there’s the famous Red Rock Brewing Company. Known for their large bar and restaurant and winner of Large Brewpub and Large Brewpub Brewer of the Year at the 2007 Great American Brew Festival. This place is a sure hit with everyone.
Shopping in Salt Lake City
Sugar House is a famous and recognizable district in Salt Lake City. It is one of the best places to go shopping with a wealth of funky shops and boutiques. It is the quintessential small town area. Shop owners are very friendly. And if you forgot some of your gear they are all too happy to assist you. While ski and snowboard gear (plus access) are the specialty, the small town charm of Salt Lake City can’t be ignored. And the little shops around the main squares in town reflect this perfectly. If you head over to Trolley Square or Main St. there are plenty of cute boutique shops that you can peruse with some friends. Head to 9th and 9th to see where the college students in this town hang out. There are more eclectic type shops here to window shop at.
