Indianapolis, the state capital and largest city of Indiana, is located right in the heart of the state and has almost 800,000 people living within the city limits, making it the 12th largest city in the US. Indianapolis is also known as the “Racing Capital of the World”, housing the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and home to the Indy 500 and Brickyard 400. Things to do in Indianapolis
To really get the Indianapolis experience you should check out the Indiana State Capitol, on West Washington Street, the Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Monument, on Monument Circle, Indiana War Memorial, on Meridian Street, Scottish Rite Cathedral, on Meridian Street, Indianapolis Zoo, Crown Hill Cemetery, American Legion National Headquarters, and Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial. Indianapolis also features many great and diverse museums that are pretty cheap and fun to go to. The Indiana State Museum, on West Washington Street, is one of the most beautiful pieces of property in the United States, and features dinosaurs, fossils, Civil War exhibits, and everything else connected to Indiana, not to mention its huge IMAX theater, special events every month, and White River State Park nearby. With admission only $7 for adults, who could pass this up? There’s also the National Art Museum of Sports, Museum of Miniature Houses, Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, Indianapolis Firefighters Museum & Historical Society, Crispus Attucks Museum, Indiana Medical history Museum, Conner Prairie Living HIstory Museum, and President Benjamin Harrison Home, all a great treat!
Nightlife in Indianapolis
Indianapolis has plenty of coffee cafes all around the city, and usually have reasonably priced meals and great atmospheres. There is a good assortment of bars and clubs in the city, but most times you have to be 21 or older. For a great time at a great bar try the 501 Eagle, 7, Alley Cat, Babes East, Blu, Bourbon Street Distillery, or Broad Ripple Brew Pub. They all have tasty food, great drinks, nice prices, and lively atmosphere, all necessary for a wild spring break! Sometimes the best things to do in a small city like Indianapolis is just to walk around on weekend nights and follow the college crowd.
Dining in Indianapolis
Indianapolis has all the major food chains that every other city has, but also some other diamond in the rough types of places. A2Z Cafe, Agio, Ambrosia, and Barcelona tapas are all great places to try and still retain the small city feel with big tastes at a great price.
Shopping in Indianapolis
Indianapolis’s shopping scene is made up of various areas that feature unique and typical shopping alike. Broad Ripple Village is filled with gift shops and unique local items. Castleton is Indianapolis biggest shopping mall full of chains, food, and other typical mall things. Mass Ave is full of local shops, and is known to locals as a cool place to hang out and shop. There’s also Indianapolis Wholesale District, located in downtown Indianapolis, and featuring a big mall right in the center.
