Known as the “City of Palms”, the streets of Fort Myers are lined with palm trees that let visitors know they are in a tropical paradise. Thomas Edison and Henry Ford made this place home for a bit of time. They both took their families away from the harsh winter of the north to relax in the heat of the sun here. Family vacationers and spring breakers alike bask in the warm sun also on long stretches of pristine beaches. This city is the perfect escape from the drone of the everyday. Tucked in the Gulf of Mexico, the water here is like bath water. And with tropical temperatures all year round you can’t pick a bad time to go.

Things to do in Fort Myers

The Thomas Edison and Henry Ford winter estates are two gorgeous buildings separated by a fence. Once used as the families’ vacationing they are both now converted museums. Take a tour of the property, garden, and interior. And make sure to see the Edison Light Spectacular if you come during the winter season. One of the biggest times for coming to Fort Myers is obviously sports training. In early spring die hard fans flock to the city to watch their favorite team get ready for the busy season. For the Minnesota Twins you can actually buy tickets for the box, dugout box, lawn seating, or bleachers to watch the team practice. Sanibel Lighthouse is a nice place to visit for an afternoon. Overlook the water and visit one of the prettiest lighthouses around. Then of course there’s the beach. Fort Myers beaches are amazing. There are a lot of water sports and activities to do with your friends. Rentals are available as well as chairs for the beach at some of the locations.

Nightlife in Fort Myers

Bars litter the beaches at Fort Myers. If you are coming with your frat or boys, stop by The Cigar Bar in downtown Fort Myers. Other fun bars for groups include Blu Sushi, Lazy Flamingo, and Dusseldorf’s. Try a bar right on the beach for the perfect combination of beach and drinks. There are a few nightclubs that are open on the weekends and during the week spring break week. Also if you are coming during the spring break weeks then there will be additional events and night parties available. These include pub crawls, MTV beach nights, and specials on drinks.

Dining in Fort Myers

The variety is endless for dining in Fort Myers. Seafood is a recurring theme in most restaurants as the city is right on the water. If you ever wanted a nice, tasty, fresh fish dish this would be the place to get some. Check menus to see if items are fresh or fresh frozen. Fresh frozen means that the fish was frozen when it was fresh. You will want to get an actual fresh piece and that shouldn’t be too difficult here. Some great spots are Blu Sushi, Mucky Duck, Bubble Room, and Parrot Key. There are also some great clam type stands along the water for lunch. Grab a bite and go to the beach or enjoy it looking out onto the water.

Shopping in Fort Myers

If you are shopping along the beach areas be prepared to see a lot of beach type items for sale. Most beachy shops sell apparel, towels, beach toys like volley balls, and other necessities. This is also where you can pick up your fun souvenirs for friends and family and to bring back with you. Coconut Pointe Town Center is a good choice for stuff that aren’t overly priced. Miromar Factory Outlet Mall is a good place to check out if you want to spend a day shopping with your girl friends. The prices are good and the selection in really nice. If you missed something at home pick it up here. Or grab something sexy to put on at night while in Fort Myers.
