Things to do in Denver
Denver is a vibrant city with activities for all. Outdoor enthusiasts will be right at home as Denver is located 15 miles from the Rocky Mountains. Skiing, hiking, and camping are just some of the activities that can be enjoyed not far outside of the city. The city is also host to four professional sports teams including the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies. Festivals and events such as the Rocky Mountain Balloon Festival, and the Starz International Film Festival can be enjoyed at various times throughout the year. The city is also home to the Denver Art Museum featuring works of art from around the globe. The Denver Mint is also located in the city and produces more US currency than any other mint.
Nightlife in Denver
Lower Downtown Denver or “LoDo” for short is the place to be for nightlife in the city. Restored Victorian buildings now house more than 90 sports bars, brew pubs, jazz clubs, and restaurants making it a popular spot for student travelers. A must see for music lovers is the Red Rocks Amphitheater, a gorgeous outdoor concert venue with amazing natural beauty and a stunning view of the Denver skyline.
Dining in Denver
Mexican food is abundant and takes a local flavor throughout the city. Denver is also known for “Western” food using ingredients such as Angus beef, buffalo, rattlesnake, cutthroat trout and Rocky Mountain oysters. There are countless restaurants throughout the city that cater to every price range. The free independent newspaper “Westword” is an excellent resource for student travelers to find just the right restaurant that fits your price range.
Shopping in Denver
The city is host to four three main shopping districts. The 16th Street Mall is home to a number of chain stores, as well as novelty shops. More high end stores can be found in the Cherry Creek Shopping District featuring the Cherry Creek Mall. Finally, Larimer Square offers great shopping as well as a rich history and eye pleasing architecture. The area between 14th and 16th Street is of particular interest.
Denver Travel Tips
- If traveling in winter, make sure to pack full winter gear, as the winters can be cold and snowy.
- If visiting the area to ski, avoid the crowds by skiing during the week and if possible avoid the busy season (Thanksgiving to New Years).
- Denver is generally a driving city so you should be willing/able to rent a car if visiting.
