Things to do in Colorado Springs
The outdoors is where you will find the majority of the sights in Colorado Springs. The Garden of the Gods is by far the most famous and recognized attraction in the area. This 1,300 acre park is famous for its red sandstone formations, which stand hundreds of feet tall straight up into the air. The term “Gods” comes from how these sculptures were formed; sculpted by rain and wind over millions of years. Palmer Park founded in 1899 by Gen. William Jackson Palmer offers hiking and hoseback riding through a mesa, which overlooks the city. Here you will see quartz, topaz, jasper, and tourmaline, as well as yucca. These trails allow beautiful photo opportunities of the city, pike’s peak, and Cheyenne Mountain. Pikes Peak Cog Railway is fun for families young and old. This 75 minute ride takes you to the top of the 14,110-foot Pikes Peak. No matter where you choose for a day excursion, bring extra batteries for the camera.
Nightlife in Colorado Springs
The nightlife in Colorado Springs takes on a midwest cowboy vibe with rodeos, stage shows, and hoe downs. Flying W Ranch, one of the most famous restaurants/shows provides an array of entertainment. A Western stage show features bunkhouse comedy, cowboy balladry, foot-stompin’ fiddle, mandolin, and guitar music. There are plenty of barn-style bar-b-que pits around the main street area. For those looking for a more sleek and posh crowd, 15C is a great little martini and cigar bar. Decorated with leather couches and dim lights, this place has a very upscale ambiance.
Dining in Colorado Springs
Colorado Springs is primarily known for its bar-b-que. Steaks and baked beans comprise many menus. Game meats are also popular at many restaurants. Briarhurst Manor and Steaksmith are two excellent suggestions for great quality bar-b-que that is sure to be as mouth watering as the view is breath taking.
Shopping in Colorado Springs
Since Colorado Springs is near many Native American reservations, there are many local and folksy shops in the town. The Villagers, Van Briggle Art Potery, Commonwheel Artist Co-op, and and the Leechpit are some must go to places just to name a few. Many of the tourist hot spots have large gift shops, which is another great spot to buy Native American crafts, local home-made items, and jewelry handmade from precious local stones.
