Buenos Aires is the capital of the Argentine Republic. It is one of the largest cities in South America. From here many tourists disperse to travel the rest of South America. Most international flights connect with Buenos Aires, which is what makes it a great idea for a trip destination. Since it is a direct flight for most airlines, the cost of flights decreases dramatically when not having to make a connection somewhere else. Cheap hotels and hostels are plentiful in this city and this doesn’t necessarily mean you are skimping on quality either. Sections of city like San Telmo offer great inexpensive lodging. Palermo Soho is another great area to look around. Student hostels are easy to find, since this city is a really fun college destination. There are shops and great dining in both areas. For dining look for ‘al pasos’. These are walk through bars where you can grab some quick food and stand at high tables with friends. This city is really great for any student traveler looking to backpack around with a few friends. If you are studying abroad in Argentina it’s a nice laid back city to relax a bit in.

Bangkok, Thailand
Have the itch to go to Asia? If you are studying abroad somewhere in Europe this idea might not be outside your reach. Thailand is a great place to visit when you are searching for the deterrence from the everyday. It is a relatively safe country, especially considering all the stuff that’s been going on in other parts of the region. Bangkok is Thailand’s capital and has the number of residents to prove it. With over 11 million people living here, it is clear why this city rules the roost. Bangkok has been rated one of Asia’s most cosmopolitan cities in fact. But that doesn’t mean that it has to come with a hefty price tag. You can easily round up a group of college student friends and come here all the while not spending much more than you would at home. Khao San Road is known widely as backpacker city. Find cool youth hostels here for equally as cool prices. Everything is easy to get to and you can hire a taxi for under $10 usually to take you from point A to B. The Skytrain and Metro also make getting around the city incredibly easy. If you ask around or at the desk of your hostel you can get the names of the inexpensive food finds. You really shouldn’t have to pay more than $5 US for a good portioned noodle and spices meal. Beers and cocktails are also fair priced. Don’t spend more than $2 US for a beer.

Atlanta is a high energy city with lots of fun things to see and do. What makes this city so great is that the lodging is much cheaper then places like NYC or Chicago. But you are still getting the wow of a city with great night life and beautiful sights. There is an actual Hotel District in this city so you can’t easily forget the name. Midtown is the other good area to look for hotels. In this city you don’t need to rent a car either to get around. Places like the World of Coca Cola, Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia Aquarium, and the CNN Center are all within walking distance. The entrance fees are relatively low at these tourist hot spots, so it’s a great idea for college students on a budget. The best part about Atlanta is that there are many student friendly “college hotels”. If you don’t mind skimping on all the glits and glam, you can find some pretty inexpensive lodging here.

Budapest, Hungary
A trip to Europe would not be complete without a stopover in Budapest. This relatively unknown city (to college students in the US) is a glamorous and fashionable iconic city. While many of us aren’t really sure what is here or why we must visit, you should know that this city has some of the hottest and craziest nightlife, excellent museums with a culture that will shock and surprise you, and gorgeous parks that put’s your garden to shame. The best part of this hidden gem is there are many cheap student flights to and from. Whether you’re coming from the states or the city you’re studying abroad in, there are plenty of inexpensive opportunities to come and visit. You will of course want to see the Royal Palace, National Gallery, Danube Bridges, and Parliament. Many student hostels allow walking distance to many of these sights. Many of the college hostels and hotels offer free transportation to and from the train station, making your stay that much easier and stress free. Castle Hill is a great place to start looking for hostels because it boasts a wealth of cheap stays with friendly, welcoming hosts. The food in Budapest is delicious and fair priced as well. Coffee houses are everywhere and offer great tasting Hungarian coffee and little snacks.

Calgary, Canada
Many American tourists think of Canada in terms of Niagara Falls and Quebec. While these cities offer up some of the most fun and best sights Canada has to offer, Calgary matches their offers and does one better. This cultural hot spot has crazy nightlife and great day activities while also providing very inexpensive lodging to college students traveling through. The University of Calgary has set aside hotel rooms for college students coming to visit the city. During the summer they offer their dorm rooms and apartments on campus for a very low price. Mount Royal college, not too far away, offers the same deal. Not too shabby staying on a college campus while exploring the city. Many of the apartments come with kitchens and living rooms. If that’s not exactly your style the Hostelling International-Calgary City Centre is a great cheap youth hostel in the city with clean, inexpensive rooms. Don’t worry about getting fed while visiting Calgary either. On practically every corner there is a sub shop, fast food, or coffee lounge to keep your belly nice and full. Try the full Canadian experience with a big Alberta beef sandwich. You will be too full to eat again that day.
