Things to Do While Staying in Athens
Athens is a city full of rich history, strong culture, and friendly people. Home to many famous sites such as the Acropolis (a world heritage site), the Ancient Agora, Kerameikos, and Temple of Olympian Zeus, this city has so many amazing things to see and do. The acropolis is obviously the most famous of all the major landmarks. It is the sole reason many tourists come to this ancient city. This area is home to some of the best and most famous Ancient Greek buildings such as the Parthenon, the Erectheion, the Temple of Athena Nike. The Ancient Agora offers a very nice view of the Acropolis. The Roman Forum is a nice extension of this location. The Kerameikos is the original site of the ancient cemetery of Athens. When you go to the Temple of Olympian Zeus keep in mind that what you are seeing is only the remaining ruins. So much history and culture lives here and has for several thousand years. It is incredible to stand in the middle of it all, taking in the ruins and trying to just imagine what this place was like two thousand years ago. Panathianiko Stadium, which was the location of the first modern day Olympic Games of 1896, is right next to the Temple of Olympian Zeus. The horseshoe shaped, huge white marble stadium is quite a beauty to behold. For a great view of the city take a funicular ride to Lycabettus Hill. There are a bunch of great little cafes on the top of the hill that you can stop in while you take in the breathtaking view. Ancient buildings and sites are not the only thing to do in Athens, however. Though they will take up the majority of your stay here, and for a good reason, there is much more to this every modernizing city. During the summer, the Athens and Epidaurus Festival runs as an event that lets you taste all the Athenian flavors. Try local dishes and some things you maybe otherwise would not. If you are visiting on the weekend, you can take a free bike tour through the city. Tours run Saturdays and Sundays and go through the old section of Athens. And don’t forget about the beaches. With all of this amazing history, it may be easy to forget that Athens is on the water and has beautiful beaches. The south of Athens is lined with beaches that are mostly open to the public. There are cafes and restrooms at every beach as well.
