Busting Hostel Myths
Whether it’s thieves, dirty bathrooms, bedbugs, party hostels, or even a Hollywood movie – everyone has heard at least one horror story about hostels. So, what’s true?

Myth #1 – If you stay at a hostel you will be abducted!
It is never too much to remember that stories of abducted and murdered backpackers are urban myths and Hollywood slasher films. Aside from being surrounded with travelers just like yourself, hostels are usually safe places, with security guards, curfews, locked rooms – the works! So please try to relax.
Myth #2 – Hostels have bed bugs
Bed bugs are far, far less common in hostels than you think. Posh places and budget motels sometimes have them, but hostels rarely do. Backpackers’ lodgings work hard to keep the critters out, so you are much more likely to find them in posh places and budget motels than in hostels.
Myth #3 – Hostels are dirty
When you’re dealing with shared facilities, things will never be as clean as they would be at home. But any good hostel will be cleaned every day and most hostelers usually clean up after themselves. Yes, you may find some bread crumbs on the kitchen counter – but you’ll live.
Myth #4 – All hostels are party places
Some hostels are incredibly tame. Others can be hopping all night. With most hostels, you can find a party if you’re looking for it – it’s not unusual to have people drinking and laughing until morning in the common areas, but you probably won’t even notice it if you’re sleeping in your room.
Myth #5 – There is always at least one Aussie in every hostel
We have traveled the world, stayed in dozens of hostels and so far, we must say, this is the only myth that has never been busted! So start practicing – ‘Good’ay mate! Another shrimp on the bar-bee?’
