The motto of Porto is “Coimbra sings, Braga prays, Lisbon shows off, and Porto works.”

Porto is less touristy and more industrial than some other cities, and it does work. The region produces most of Portugal’s famed port wine. It’s not all work and no play in Porto though. The city was named a Cultural Capital of Europe for 2001.

Exploring the wine estates of the Douro valley, and sampling the various ports is just one reason to visit. Among the points of interest of the city are the old quarter, with narrow, cobbled streets; the cathedral (12th-18th century); and the 18th-century Torre dos Clerigos (Tower of the Clerics) and the three graceful bridges that span the river. Porto is also home to the University of Porto and the National Museum of Soares dos Reis, containing a collection of paintings and antiquities.

Wine connoisseurs, nature lovers, train enthusiasts head to Porto from April through September. The north of Portugal is rainier than the rest of the country, and late spring to late summer is the best time to visit. Winter can be bitter cold and windy.

    Things to do in Porto

The Cathedral, Palacio da Bolsa (stock exchange), Torre dos Clerigos, and Igreja de Sao Francisco are historic and religious highlights. Major museums include the Museu do Electrico, Museu do Arte Contemporanea, and Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis.

    Nightlife in Porto

Nightlife is centered around the waterfront areas and there are several discos and bars to chose from. Porto also has some wonderful cinemas. If you’re not tired of port yet, check out one of the wine bars and sample some various vintages.

    Dining in Porto

Tripas a moda do Porto (Oporto tripe) and port wine, of course, are local delicacies. Check out Restaurante Portucale which is located on top of a clock tower. It has delicious international cuisine and a beautiful view overlooking the Duoro River.

    Shopping in Porto

Porto has several shopping malls that are designed more for locals than for visitors. There are also regional markets on weekends. Portugal is getting more expensive, but it is still one of the cheapest places to travel in Europe. Outside major tourist areas, prices are much lower. Check out residencias or pensaos; some of them are very reasonable and are pleasant alternatives to hostels.

    Porto Travel Tips

    • Take a boat cruise and explore the wine caves!
    • Porto has some steep streets and rough pavement so wear some comfortable walking shoes.
    • Be aware of the café’s along the waterfront because since they cater to tourists, they are rather expensive, so choose wisely.
