Things to do in Paris
Paris is a good place to start travel around Europe. Want to check out Paris within two hours? Walk from west to east starting from the Arc de Triomphe to Ile de la Cite or the Notre Dame Cathedral. You’ll find major stores and restaurants near the Obelisk and the major attractions and monuments ending with a stroll along the Seine. Have fun sight-seeing from a boat or bus, or even while skating or bicycling. Buying a tourist pass is the most convenient way to visit the top Paris attractions. Have more fun in the various events scattered throughout the year- Spring Fashion in March, Preen Tennis Open in May, and Bastille Day Fireworks or Outdoor Cinema in July.
Nightlife in Paris
Get a full night in Paris either in the bars or in the de luxe clubs. You can start in a dive bar then go to trendy clubs. Most cozy cafes and clubs are in the Canal St. Martin, the Marais, in the Bastille, the new-wave oriented Quartier Latin-Odeon for students and intellectuals like you and near Rue Mouffetard to name some interesting places.
Dining in Paris
Great student travel wouldn’t be complete without great dining. Paris is known as a culinary center, second to Lyon. There are hundreds of beautiful restaurants with cartes and menus that mix French and exotic foreign cuisine. Traditional bistros with sidewalk terraces abound. It’s best to get a petit dejeuner (croissants and fruit) for breakfast and a walking lunch from panino (food stands). You’d save much by making lunch the main meal of the day. A good place is La Tavern de Montmarte. Try a combo of Mousel frites (steamed mussels) and French fries.
Shopping in Paris
Like most college students around the world over, you’ll find Paris a shopper’s delight because it is a great fashion center. The 8th arrondisement is home to high end couture. Good shopping areas include – Canal St. Mair, Palais Royal, Le Marais and Boulevard St. Germaine. There are three main flea markets in the outskirts at Clignan Court for antique goods and retro fashion. Spring and summertime are the best for shopping sprees.
Paris travel tips
- People in Paris speak rapid French with slang terms, not written French taught in schools. But French in tourist areas can often speak English as do young people like you.
- Buy a “Paris Pratigue par Arrondisement” map for getting around the city.
- Try and visit the Eiffel Tower at night rather than during the day because it is all lit up and even more gorgeous at night time.
