Things to do in Crete
Besides the incredible views of the ocean, beaches, and lush greenery, the ancient ruins are the main reason that tourists come to visit Crete. The ruins of the ancient Minoan civilization in Knossos are a great sight to see. This was the main city of the Minoan civilization 4,000 years ago. Take a guided tour of the grounds to appreciate all the artifacts. And check out the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. Another great place where you are taken back in time a few thousand years. This is the best way to truly appreciate the history of the Greeks. Definitely make sure you head to the beach. One of the best things about being on an island is you are surrounded by the warm Mediterranean ocean. Vai Beach is lined with palm trees with plenty of gorgeous sandy spots to lay out. Samaria Gorge is another cool place to get in the water. It’s a nice opportunity to cool off, especially on those really hot days.
Nightlife in Crete
Wine bars have the best nightlife. There aren’t too many notable clubs in Crete. However during the summer a few bars have music and dancing. Many locals love the drink, Raki. You can find it in any bar on the island. This is the best way to get that authentic Crete night out. Nightlife usually starts later then most other places. You won’t want to go out before midnight. And the night can continue well into the morning, sometimes even five or six am. Just be sure to go out with friends if you plan on drinking as some locals may try to take advantage.
Dining in Crete
One of the best things about traveling to Greece is the amazing food. Those from Crete always seem very healthy and fit. This is in part due to the Mediterranean diet of fresh produce and low fat foods. Only the freshest dishes of cheese, meats, and salads are prominent here. Graviera is the most popular of cheeses and lamb is of course the best meat. Family restaurants will provide you with the best tasting lamb, it is a bragging right of sorts. When planning to dine keep in mind that restaurants open late, as with everywhere else in Greece. You will want to wait until after 8:00 to go out. Most places get busy around 10:00 or even 11:00. This is more so during the high season though. Meals can take up to three hours or longer depending on how big your group is.
Shopping in Crete
There are many great Greek items to purchase while in Crete. As far as souvenirs go there are plenty of small shops and carts around the major tourist areas. The beach also has some shops with essentials like sunscreen and sun glasses. Also souvenirs like shot glasses, flags, magnets, and mugs are here. If you miss your big chance to get something, the airport always has a great selection of items for purchasing, plus they’re duty free. If you want something truly authentic get your hands on a nice bottle of Greek wine of Olive Oil. If you can bring back some feta cheese that would be delicious as well, although a tad more difficult because of customs.
