Things to do in Bucharest
Bucharest doesn’t have too many things to do, but makes up for it in the fantastic things it has to see! Parliament Palace, in the heart of Bucharest, is the world’s second largest building and open to tours lasting 45 minutes which depart every half hour. This monster of a building was build in 1984, and spans 12 stories, 3100 rooms and covers over 330,000 sq. miles. Bucharest also has some great museums that are worth the trip. The Village Museum, an original open air museum created in 1932, shows what Romania used to be like in the old days. There you can see all the different furniture, clothes, and pottery that was used many years ago. Also be sure to hit up the Art Museum, located in the building of the former Royal palace. Ancient, modern, and contemporary Romanian art fills the walls of this museum as well as exhibitions of rare European art dating back as early as the 14th century. Another great sight is the many churches and monasteries throughout Bucharest. Curtea Veche Church, built around 1559, is like a trip back in time. This beautiful structure is not to miss!
Nightlife in Bucharest
Bucharest might have some old buildings, but don’t let this fool you. This city comes alive at night and is a great place to spend a wild spring break. Be sure to hit up Cafe Hazard, in Baratiei. This rock bar has a great, urban atmosphere and tasty beer. Some other great places to check out include Gossip, Club A, Fire Club, Bamboo, The office, and Planter’s. All have great music, drinks, atmosphere, and people. What more could you want?
Dining in Bucharest
To have a truly exclusive Bucharest dining experience do not miss the POEM Restaurant, located in Suter Str. This elegant palace is known for it’s top international chefs, great food, and posh atmosphere, but with a price. Also be sure to check out Jaristea, Bucharest’s historically themed restaurant, with live traditional music, and old Romanian specialties. Be sure to make a reservation early!
Shopping in Bucharest
All the upscale brand-name shops and boutiques are found along the main boulevard from Piata Romana to Piata Unirii, and on Calea Victoriei. Shopping is pretty standard with different malls and stores. For most of your shopping, head over to Bucharest Mall, in Calea Vitan. This rather large mall has many different name brand shops. For some good reads, try Nautilus, an English language bookstore near the Kiseleff Park.
