Belgrade
The capital of the Republic of Serbia and the largest city in the country, Belgrade commands a lot of attention. With only 2 million people, it is clear to see that this country is a tad smaller than what you may be used to. But you know what they say, good things come in small packages. Though Serbia is a less known place than others, there are some amazing things to see here. Dating back to 4th century BC and founded by Celtic tribes, this place has a lot of culture and interesting history. Since being taken back over rule under Serbia in the 1800’s, Belgrade has only improved itself and come front in center in the 21st century. Vacationers love coming for the education and lovely sights. Why not book a cheap ticket and come and see for yourself?

Beer is the drink of choice and you can find it everywhere in Belgrade. Jelen, Lav, MB, and Pils are some of the local brews. Heineken, Amstel, Tuborg, Stella Artois, and Beck’s are also made in Serbia. Drinks shouldn’t cost too much at any establishment. Rakija is the local drink that is similar to a brandy that is very strong. So be careful when drinking this. Strahinjića Bana is a good place to go to bar hop or stop in for a nightcap at a lounge. Many of the cafes on this street have little areas outside to enjoy a drink with friends. The weekends are definitely the best time to go out. Although, you will find some establishments open late during the week as well.
Dining in Belgrade
Skadarlija Street offers a wealth of great restaurants from the very expensive to the casual and relaxed. Be careful of tap water served in drinking glasses. Unless you are used to the water here, you will want to stick with the bottled water and bottled beers/wines. Serbian food consists of heavy meats, heavy, cheeses, and thick loaves of bread. Most restaurants cater only to Serbian food and it might be difficult to find other types of cuisine everywhere. But why would you not want to indulge in this filling food? Rostilj is a traditional platter of a variety of meats. Kajmak is a type of cheesy butter that is spread over peppers. Both dishes are excellent and can be ordered in practically every restaurant.
Shopping in Belgrade
There are hefty import taxes on goods that are not from the country. So if you need to buy the essentials do so sparingly. Other than that the prices of local goods are incredibly cheap as the currency is weak to our dollar. Stores stay open late on weekdays, however close surprisingly early on Saturdays and Sundays. So plan accordingly. Artisti is a chain-store that sells a lot of goods. Knez Mihailova Street is a good place to go to check out a variety of cute shops. This is where you will want to stock up on your souvenirs.
