The capital and largest city in Panama, Panama City is a very multicultural city with populations from all over the world. The city has come a long way in the last several years, and is beginning to have a very cosmopolitan feel, although there are still some run down sections. The older original parts of the city include 16th century settlements that are actually in the process of restoration. A great place to visit, Panama City has excellent shopping, restaurants, and hotels to complete your stay.

Things to do in Panama City
When in Panama City, you have to see the Panama Canal. The most convenient and cheapest way is to go to Miraflores locks and watch the boats sail by. For an all around experience of the canal, take a train along it or a boat down it. Panama Viejo, or the old city, contains the ruins and remains of the city with the deep history to be discovered. Along with this, Casco Viejo has many antique colonial style buildings, cathedrals, and museums. Check out the Mi Pueblitos museum to experience each of the different ethnicities incorporated into the culture of Panama. If you are looking for a relaxing way to spend the day, head to the Amador Causeway, which connects the three islands to the mainland. Locals bike, jog, or just sit and relax here–there is an amazing view of the city as a backdrop.
Nightlife in Panama City
The best place to head for an exciting night out in Panama City is the neighborhood of Calle Uruguay, which is filled with bars and discos. Wealthy Panamanians and many tourists head to popular bars like La Bodeguita, featuring live salsa music on weekends. La Casona de las Brujas is another great bar attached to an art gallery in a courtyard with live bands and varied music. Also check out Taberna 21, which is one of the more popular hangouts for locals, serving cheap beer and delicious Spanish tapas.
Dining in Panama City
While in Panama City, it is a must that you try the Panamanian and Cuban coffee, because it is said to be the best you’ll ever have. Cafes are very popular places to grab a light lunch, from sandwiches, to coffee and churros at such places as Manolo’s Churreria or Del Prado. For a taste of typical Panamanian cuisine, from paella to seafood, go to El Trapiche, where they serve a delicious breakfast as well as other meals. Some of the best Chinese food in the city can be found at Lung Fung, where you can also have Dim Sum any day of the week. If you’re looking to splurge, head to the Manolo Caracol to dine on tapas and seasonal specialties.
Shopping in Panama City
If you are looking to walk around and shop along the street markets of Panama City, head to Caledonia for unique shops and boutiques. The Albrook Shopping Mall has great prices and high quality shops, including a cinema where you can catch a film. Street vendors selling handwoven Panamanian crafts are great for souveneirs. These include baskets, animal sculptures, and mosaics. Along with these, many Indian stores sell Panamanian souvenirs, including shops in the Centro de Artsanias.
Panama City travel tips
- Spanish is the language spoken predominantly, but many speak English as well.
- Most Panamanians are very friendly people, and will be willing to help you or give advice if needed during your travels.
- The best way to get around the city is by bus or by taxi. The prices are not set by meters, but by authorities depending on what part of the city you are in.
