Here is a list of some good backpacking tips if you are on a budget. And let’s face it, what college student is not on a budget these days? Just because you are pinching pennies doesn’t mean you can’t have a fun backpacking trip. It does mean being smart, finding ways to cut corners, and having a little extra left over at the end of your trip. With these tips below you will be having a great trip in no time and worry free with your money.

1. Pack light

The key to backpacking is ‘less is more’. Stick to this rule of thumb and you will be all set. Sometimes students love to go overboard and bring six swimsuits and ten pairs of jeans. Well guess what, this is not the way to effectively backpack a place. If you are being boggled down by too much stuff then you will miss out some great opportunities like seeing more things and catching that last minute train. You will also save money with airlines for not paying extra for overweight luggage or checked bags.

2. Leave valuables at home

There is really no need to bring your favorite ring you got for graduation of those earrings Dad gave you for your birthday. When backpacking the idea is to only have the basics on hand. Keep this in mind; only have things on you that you don’t mind too much to replace. Not to say it isn’t a bummer to have to get new clothing if your bag gets swiped, but it is a whole lot easier than something you will really miss not having.

3. Let someone know

Often people make the mistake of taking off on a trip and not telling family or friends. Even if you don’t want Mom and Dad breathing down your back, it’s a really good idea to let someone back home have a general idea of where you are going and how long you will be gone. Also have a way of getting in touch with you. The last thing you want is for some emergency on your end or at home and having no means of communication.

4. Get a hostel with a kitchen

When you are booking a hostel check to see if they have a communal kitchen or complimentary breakfast. Often there is a kitchen available for use with some utensils and cooking items. Making a couple meals at your hostel will save you and your friends a lot of money in the long run.

5. Buy a train pass

If you know you will be backpacking in one area, such as Northern Europe, Southern Europe, or Asia, then you can pre-purchase a train pass that allows you to travel within certain countries for a set amount of time. This elevates the stress of waiting in long lines at train stations. Plus you will end up saving money because you bought in bulk. Just be sure to

6. Be careful of gypsies

Many countries, even the most cosmopolitan, have some form of gypsies. These women and sometimes men are trained to feed on tourists. They know right away that you are not a local and that they can take advantage of you. The best way to save money when backpacking is to keep your money close to you. The fastest way to lose money when traveling is by a gypsy stealing it right from under you.

7. Buy alcohol at a store

Bars and clubs love charging tourists for drinks. In major cities especially they know when you are coming and where to get you. For instance, around major tourist sites bars will charge more for beers then in other places knowing that you aren’t going to stray too far. If you buy your alcohol at a store then you can pregame at your hostel and buy less drinks when you go out. Many cities also allow public drinking. So check the guide books first for this.

8. Bring your own snacks

Bringing some energy bars or granola bars with you during the day can help fight off hunger cravings in between meals. Snacks during the day can easily add up to just as much money as a meal. With bars in hand you won’t be spending your money on unnecessary snacks and can save it for other things.

9. Walk instead of taking a cab

It may feel easier to hop a cab and head to a destination. But don’t do it! Between the mileage cost, tipping, and of course the added secret tourist fee (many cab drivers charge tourists more than locals because they don’t disclose rates) you are looking at a hefty bill. Walking a little extra is good for your body and then environment not to mention your wallet. If something is really out of walking range then take a bus or metro. They tend to run less then $2 in most cities around the world.

10. Watch your drink cards at clubs

In a lot of European countries clubs require drink cards at the door. Clubs hand them out, you get them punched each time you order a drink, and then when you leave you cash out. There are many instances of drunk club goers getting extra punches and not taking notice so they get charged double. Also if you loose your card, good luck. The fees for a lost card can be astronomical. So just make sure you keep track of your drink card and who is punch them.

Backpacking is one of the most fun adventure to go on. College students for years and years have enjoyed grabbing their gear, some good friends, and a map and setting out onto an unknown place. It is also one of the best economical ways to vacation. Don’t worry about burning the cash because with these top ten places to backpack you will be seeing the world without dipping too far into the bank account. Get ready for a fun time with some good friends. Grab your gear and let’s go.

India

Backpacking India is easy and inexpensive. As far as countries go for cheap backpacking this place tops the list. Food, accommodations, and travel are very cheap compared to other places around the world. Backpacker’s hostels are located in all the major cities and many touring guides appeal to college travelers as well. Backpacking India means leaving luxuries like hot water pressure and air conditioning at home in exchange for some pretty incredible sites and people to meet.

Brazil

Places like Rio de Janeiro draws tourists in, yet there are many more things to see here that you may have not thought of. Head to Porto Alegre and see Aparados da Serra National Park. Regional buses can take you from city to city to help getting around easier. Also taking a Portuguese phrase book with you will make transactions and bartering less stressful. Make sure you also plan some time to backpack through the Amazon jungle. It’s quite the sight.

Portugal

Portugal has the Mediterranean flavor without the high costs like Spain and Italy. Here your dollar can stretch far with things like food and hostels. Travel is fairly cheap as well. The well connected train lines connect most of the major cities. Taxis are much cheaper in cities like Lisbon then in places like Paris and London. Head to Algarve for incredible beaches. This will be the most costly of the places you can go here, but it is still much cheaper then beaches in the South of France and Spanish beach cities.

Sri Lanka

Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lana, is the most popular city to visit here. Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte is actually the capital of the country and worth a visit to as well. The Buddha statues and Galle Face Green Promenade in Colombo are awesome. You will feel as though you have traveled to another time and place when you come to Sri Lanak. The people are very friendly and willing to meet your needs.

Mexico

Mexico is awesome and for the most part very cheap to backpack through. As long as you steer clear of places like Cancun you will be all set. As with many slightly economically depressed countries, Mexico offers hostels and B&Bs at excellent prices. Plan to see the Mayan Ruins of Tulum, Mexico City and the commercial capital of the country, a volcano in Toluca, and if there’s time go white water rafting in Veracruz.

Greece

One of the oldest and most established cultures in the world, Greece is a tourists haven. Many of the cities like Athens lure tourists in with their ancient ruins, charm, incredible food, and entertainment. Summer is the best time to come here when the weather is perfect and every shop is open for tourist season. You can visit ancient ruins from thousands of years ago or head to the beach on one of the amazing islands. Whatever you choose you will be having a fabulous time exploring Greece. Plus you get to it all for very cheap as a college backpacker.

Morocco

Lots of sand plus camels plus henna equals a unique and fun time. Morocco is a holistic paradise where you check your home comforts at the door and welcome getting back to the basics. Here there isn’t electricity and running water everywhere. Although hotels and most hostels have it. The key here is to learn about the culture, see some incredible sites, and save some money while backpacking.

Bali

Indonesia’s pride and joy, Bali is a must for any backpacker looking for fun and saving money. Tropical jungles, long stretches of beaches, caves, volcanoes, and locals are why tourists love to come to this place. For college students, it is easy to get around and meet other college students Visit museums and galleries and take in a Balinese dance with an authentic dinner.

Peru

Peru is really an amazing place to visit. When choosing where to backpack inexpensively consider this place as your destination. Rainforests, ruins, and beaches are plentiful. Lima the capital is a good place to start your trip if you don’t have a game plan. The cool part about Peru also is that you don’t really need a plan. Just have a map, a little Spanish under your belt, and a good pair of hiking shoes. You’re all set for a once in a lifetime adventure.

Croatia

Visiting Croatia can give you the illusion that you are somewhere expensive. However, unlike Europe, you can get the glam without the pricetag. And if you are backpacking Croatia then you are all set. Hostels and inexpensive restaurants and bars are plentiful. Don’t worry about wasting money on pricey hotels. You can stay in a comfortable youth hostel with other college students and still see all the great sites. If you are planning to visit this summer make sure you get over to Dubrovnik. There is a large summer festival going on the entire month of July.

When getting ready to graduate from college several things go through your mind like should you go to grad school? What job are you going to get? And also very importantly, where are you going to live? The dorms are closed and Mom and Dad’s house does not seem like the fun spot. It is important to many college grads to live somewhere where they can be among other college grads and young professionals, and something affordable, but also nice. There are a lot of factors that go into choosing the place that is right for you. Below is a list of the top cities that college grads right now are living in to help make your decision making a lot easier.
Browse Now

Cleveland, Ohio

Ohio in general is an inexpensive state to live in. Renting in the larger cities can be cheap and you will get a lot for your dollar here. Average one bedroom apartments go for around $650. And if you ever considered buying, houses are at an all time low here. Browse Now

The beach is what draws college students in. One of the best places to travel on a budget, Myrtle Beach is not one of those crazy over-priced tourist cities. It caters to the everyman. Broadway is a combination of bars, restaurants, and shopping. This is your one-stop nightlife destination. If you are heading with a bunch of friends, look into condo and beach house rentals. You will be surprised how affordable they can be split between a few people.

Lake George, New York

Camping around this area is inexpensive. Plus you get the added perk of the lush scenery and being able to cook your own meals. There are free beaches at various points on the lake for swimming and laying out. Other free and inexpensive activities include hiking, kayak rentals, and paddle boats. The bars aren’t too bad either here. Enjoy dollar draft nights at some of the local bars. Or just grab a log next to the camp fire and enjoy some quality time with friends.

Washington DC

The country’s capital happens to be a relatively inexpensive place to visit. All outdoor monuments including the Lincoln and Jefferson are free to see. The National Mall is one of the most famous sites here as well. It connects to the White House, most monuments, the Holocaust Memorial, and the FBI building just too name a few things. Walk around, sit on one of the benches and take it all in. Accommodations aren’t bad either to make this a great budget trip.

Niagara Falls, Ontario

The falls are free to look at and walk around various gardens. Maid of the Mist, White Water Walk, and Journey Behind the Falls are the top sights and are fairly priced. Nightlife can be expensive or not depending on where you go. The main drag in downtown Niagara is the best place for bars. Many hostels are located around this area for cheap accommodations. And for other nightlife activities try out one of the casinos on the Canadian side.

New Orleans, Louisiana

If you are looking for a good, old southern fun time then head to New Orleans. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina this city is looking for business and is ready and willing to go above and beyond for tourists. College students love to come during Mardi Gras and Phat Tuesday, but don’t count out the summer for a fun budget trip. With the French Quarter and Bourbon Street and river ferries and cruises there is plenty to keep busy with. One of the most celebrated and historic cities in the southwest, New Orleans is a great place to visit.

Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta has a lot to offer to college students traveling on a budget. With inexpensive museums like Atlanta Cycloram and the Jimmy Carter library there is fun educational things to see and do. If that’s not your style there is always the World of Coca Cola complete with free samples. Then there is Turner Field and the Georgia Dome. No matter what there is a lot to see here. Downtown has great shops and cheap eats too like the Varsity with the world’s largest drive-thru.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Summer is the best time to visit Philadelphia or “Philly”. Grab a traditional cheese steak and hit the cobblestone roads for this fun trip. With non-stop outdoor festivals, concerts, activities, and yes actors dressed up in 18th century garb you know you will be having a fun time here. There are plenty of hostels and cheap hotels in the area to make this a very budget friendly place.

Grand Canyon, Arizona

Check out the North Rim and South Rim here. Take an audio tour with your own cell phone. Take a scenic ride overlooking the canyon. Then crash in your tent at your awesome campsite. The Grand Canyon is one of the most fun and inexpensive summer getaways. Outdoor activities is what makes this a place people keep wanting to come back for more. Besides gas money, you will not be needing to spend much of anything here.

Nashville, Tennessee

The country music capitol of the world, this place is a rumpin’ home style good time. But don’t let the fact that Nashville is country music haven turn you off. There are plenty of posh and sophisticated city things to do as well. Nightlife here is cheap and good. Not all places are going to be budget friendly, but there are enough to make this place find a spot on this list. Plus there are so many things to see and do and places to visit. Roam the streets and window shop to your heart’s content.

Summer is the best time for a good old fashion adventure. Whether you’re into extreme sports or volunteering in a remote part of the world, there is a little something for everyone. Below is a list of the top summer adventures. Some are right out your front door and others require a full tank of gas. Try one, two, or them all. Regardless you will have a great time and have an adventure this summer that will bring lots of lifelong memories.

Hike a mountain

A lot of regions in the United States have some pretty good hiking spots and you don’t even have to leave the country. Alaska, Washington, California, and Colorado have some of the highest peaks. Over in the Northeast and down in North Carolina are some other pretty impressive mountains that are great for avid hikers or beginners looking for a little adventure. Maybe make a trip out of it and try to hit up as many mountain peaks as you can, before you get too tired or you’re out of cash.

Follow a band’s tour

A lot of bands love doing cross-country tours and also heading over to Europe during the summer. Taking a couple weeks or a month off from your boring life to follow a band’s tour is one of the coolest adventures you could have this summer. You’ll get to listen to some awesome music, meet great people, and see some places you probably didn’t even know were out there.

Backpack Europe

Backpacking Europe allows the freedom and adventure so many college kids crave. A few articles on studentuniverse.com detail different areas in Europe and the best things to see and do while you’re traveling. A trip through Europe without any real game plan is a great summer adventure to be had. Be one of the few college students who get to enjoy the excitement and energy of backpacking Europe with a few of your close friends.

Join Habitat For Humanity

Head down south with a group to some of the most hit and destroyed places in the country. Meet great people who are all working for a common cause. And help better another person’s life in the process. The rush and excitement you will get from all the activity coupled with the feeling of gratification you get from helping others is the best combination for a summer adventure. Though maybe not the most daring and thrilling, this type of adventure is one of the best kinds.

White Water Rafting

The summer is the best time to round up a group of friends and head out on a white water rafting adventure. From the Poconos to the Lakes region in New Hampshire to Colorado, there are many opportunities for White Water Rafting. Either a day trip, or an overnight weekend, you can have a great time with your college buddies. Many places have campsites located right next to the rivers, which makes the trip really convenient.

Road Trip

The age old tradition of taking a road trip across the country. Stretches of flat road across the mid west is what makes this the most fun. You will meet different communities, try different foods, and experience a wealth of places you have only dreamed of. Choose a couple states or a bunch to drive through. Remember to mix a CD of your favorite tunes and grab some good munchies for the trip. You will be having a great time sooner then you think.

Join Peace Corp’s Summer Programs

The Peace Corp travels all over the world, helping those in need. They do everything from teaching people in third world countries to helping build communities. For a few weeks or months during the summer you can opt to volunteer at one of these locations. You will fly out and meet up with a group to begin your summer adventure helping others in communities around the globe. The best part is you will have the great feeling of helping others while also having some fun.

Visit the Great Lakes

Much like the ocean, except without the obnoxious salt water, the Great Lakes are the largest bodies of water in the US. They are so large, in fact, that they may appear to be like the ocean. The beaches at many points have waves from the gravitational moon pull just like in the ocean. So you can boogy board, surf, you name it. Head to just one or try to see all five. Either way you will have a great time here.

Visit Breweries around the country

What a fun summer it would be if you could road trip from brewery to brewery, trying all the local varieties and micro brews. Head to places like Stone Brewing Company in California, Boston Brew Company in Massachusetts, Dogfish Head Brewing in Delaware, Magic Hat Brewing in Vermont, Rogue Brewing Company in Oregon, and New Glarus Brewing in Wisconsin. Visit some, visit them all, mix and match your favorites. Either way, you will be having one heck of a summer adventure.

Hit up wine country in Northern California

Many people don’t really know how much fun Northern California can be. Napa Valley is an incredible place with vineyard tours and taste testing, events, musical performances, and the Redwood Forest nearby. The redwood trees are the tallest and largest in the world. You haven’t seen big until you see these natural giants. Great wine, great food, great atmosphere, what more could you ask for in a summer adventure?

Even though you are out of school for the summer you still have a lot on your plate. Summer jobs, summer classes, family affairs. It’s enough to make you feel like you’re still in the classroom. How do you beat the heat and still save a couple bucks? These ten summer weekend retreats will surely rejuvenate you for the next week. Plus they won’t break the bank. Go on one or spend your entire summer weekends enjoying some of the most relaxing and beautiful places that are also close by.

San Francisco

On the west coast one of the most pretty cities is San Francisco. Not as congested and expensive as Los Angeles and not as smoggy as San Diego, San Francisco is a really cool place. With their notable red trolley cars you can see and explore the whole city. There is also a large gay population here and they are overall very accepting in general. Aquariums, beaches, beautiful sites, and even a casino makes San Francisco a great weekend trip. Stay in one of the colorful neighborhoods for the real taste of the city.

Cape Cod

At the bottom of Massachusetts on the tip is a wonderful place. Many of the elite and upper tire come here for their summer houses and gorgeous views. But thankfully for the rest of us there are hotels, camping, and B&B’s to accommodate even the meager college student. The water at the Cape is really nice as are the views. Plus the seafood here is some of the best in the world. Grab your fish and chips with a little lemon slice and you’re really in business. The Cape is better known for its’ relaxing water activities and you won’t find too much surfing or snorkeling. But what you will find are more economical activities like tanning and boogy boarding.

Montreal

Our French-Canadian neighbors to the north have this great city, Montreal, that is and has been an attraction for college students. This is in part because of their lower drinking age of 18. Also it can feel like you are in Europe without actually having to board a plane. For many in the Northeast this makes for a fun road trip. The streets are cobble stone in some parts, the language is lovely, and yes you can drink at the clubs and bars.

Wine Country

Napa Valley in California is a great alternative to the beach. For those 21+ a weekend in Napa Valley is simply wonderful. Visit a few vineyards and try the local Pinot or Sauvignon. Couple that with a tasty dinner at a local restaurant and you’re in heaven. Though this is often a couples activity, groups of friends can have fun (especially the girls) taste testing different variety grape bunches. All in all a very relaxing weekend.

New York City

The name is enough said, but we’ll elaborate a little. The Big Apple is the most exciting city in the country. Broadway, Times Square, Central Park, Empire State Building, and the best shopping around; NYC is what it’s all about. A weekend here won’t nearly cover everything, but it will certainly give you a taste. Try the cheesecake, it really is the best. And if you get a chance head over to Ellis Island and The statue of Liberty, one of the iconic statues of this country.

Florida Keys

Hello fun and excitement. The Florida Keys really know how to get the party going. This has been a long running destination for college students since the bikini was invented. Long stretches of powder sandy beaches and intoxicating nightlife makes this spot a real great weekend get-a-way. If you don’t have the time or money for a week in the Keys, take a few days to have a good time instead. Remember your sunblock and towel because you will not want to leave the beach here.

Grand Canyon

This place is one of the most sought after destinations for college students looking for a good time. The Grand Canyon, if not already on your to-do list, definitely should be. You just can’t imagine anything so amazing and huge until you actually see it. There is a lot of lodging around the sightseeing points. Camping is also available if that is more your speed. The cool thing about Grand Canyon is you don’t really need more than a weekend to get it all in. That is really the only main attraction people come for.

Savannah

Savannah, Georgia takes visitors back to the simpler, old way. Ever hear of the term “southern hospitality”? Well you will certainly receive it here. Horse-drawn carriage rides, ghost tours, and large breakfasts with all the fixings. This city has a quaint charm that is really nice. The history here adds an additional charm. You will be able to see large, old buildings and former plantation estates. Tybee Island, the local beach is great for a fun day of soaking up sun and water sports.

Denver

Denver, also known as the Mile High City, is a perfect spot for a few days of fun. The city has a lot of activities during the day and small city charm. LoDo square is the best for shopping or nightlife. Directly outside of the city are the mountains. Take a drive up there for some great outdoor adventure activities. When the snow comes off the mountains the summer sports start up. Take the lift to the top and enjoy the great view of the mountains. Or take a nature hike through one of the trails.

Red Rock Country

This is roadtrip heaven. With only stretches of pavement ahead of you, take a mini weekend get-a-way on the open road in Arizona. Coconino National Forest is breathtaking with large boulders in the background and the freshest of air around you. Campsites are plentiful, so don’t worry about a fancy, expensive hotel. Camp out and take hikes around the forest. There are set trails and maps available at the local stations. There is also a road map if you choose to drive around looking at the sites. A weekend of this is sure to relax away any stress you may have from the week.

Brussels, Belgium

Brussels is the capital city of Belgium, but many also consider it the capital of the European Union. Though Brussels is the headquarters of both NATO and the European Union, you don’t have to worry about being surrounded by just international diplomats. This beautiful city has several vibrant areas, such as Elsene, which is packed with restaurants and bars. Brussels is surrounded by parks and one of the coolest is the Cinquantenaire park.
Berlin, Germany

Berlin has played a key role in several tragic historical events; it was the base for Hitler’s Nazi army, the battleground of the cold war, and it was later divided by the Berlin Wall. Berlin remembers its past with several monuments and museums that are all worth seeing. Today Berlin is the heart of Germany and a wonderful and exciting city. Students traveling to Berlin can enjoy trendy restaurants, shops, pubs and boutiques. Berlin has great public transportation, so you’ll be able to get around the city easily.
Istanbul, Turkey

Guidebooks write about how “Istanbul straddles Europe and Asia,” but that’s not the reason you should visit the city formerly known as Constantinople. The real reason is the sense of mystery and intrigue you feel when you arrive. Turkish pop music blares against the call of the muezzin. Carpet dealers bully and charm you into buying a rug as you wander down smoky alleyways to lavish palaces. Women in headscarves and long skirts, men in jeans and Billy Idol tee-shirts rush by as you lose your way in the invigorating chaos of a back street bazaar. Istanbul is shrouded in history, layered in religion, and wrapped up in theatre. Muslim life blends seamlessly with the business of the street. Food vendors offer delicious samples of lokum, a young boy hawks electronics from Taiwan while a man stops and prays at a street-side mosque. Shopping is like swimming in an ocean of people – carpet sellers, shoeshine boys and salesmen from stores push at the tide of bodies wandering through the streets. Cars roar past, and the air is thick with the smells of spice, fish, and flowers – and the treasures of Turkey. Make sure you spend some time in Istanbul to experience its rich culture.

Manchester, England

Manchester, located in north-west England, has a classy culture with a historic vibe. With it’s 2.5 million people in the greater area, Manchester is never short of party-goers. Old meets new in Manchester with some of the oldest buildings in England sitting right next to some of the hottest clubs. Throw in a fantastic soccer team and tons of music venues and you have a great time ahead of you! Manchester never fails as an exciting stay for students!

Athens, Greece

Athens is more than just a city. It is the birthplace of modern civilization, the beginning of the creation of the west, and the start of democracy and rule. The capital of Greece and a major metropolitan with 3.7 million citizens, this city has a lot to offer to college students looking for an experience. With a gorgeous skyline, many old and beautiful buildings, and ruins that date back to B.C. It is a really amazing place for anyone to visit, especially to stay in for a while. It’s a great way to get the full feeling of Athens and see it through the lens of the locals.

Seville, Spain

Seville draws in tourists from around the world annually. The colors and vibrant nature of this Andalucian city has been luring students to visit for years. Located in southern Spain and the capital of Andalucia (southern region of Spain), Seville is not just a pretty city. It is also the cultural and financial center for Spain. With a little over 1.6 million people living here, this city rounds out the top four largest in the country. The orange tree-lined streets are filled with businessmen, college students, and tourists looking for a good time. A myth is that Hercules himself founded Seville and it was at a time ruled by Romans, then later the Moorish. The history alone is fascinating. However, the sights and attractions will blow you away and the coast is to die for. See why thousands of students come here every year for culture and history of Seville.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Even in the rain, Edinburgh is just downright beautiful. From the ruggedness of Edinburgh Castle and the mannered Georgian mansions of New Town, to the emphatic Scottish culture of the capital, Edinburgh is a city that welcomes tourists. This city is built not just on hills, but on history, romance, and culture. The city is filled with everything a student traveler could ask for. History, festivals, and great nightlife make the city a great place to visit. Travelers can experience a wide variety of activities from visiting Edinburgh Castle to enjoying a rugby match. It also allows you to explore a country that is at times overlooked due to its more popular neighbors, Ireland and England.

Marseille, France

Next to Paris and Lyon, Marseille is the most populous commune in France and the second largest in terms of land area. Located on the shores of the Mediterranean coast, Marseille is one of the oldest cities in Europe and is listed as a major center of art and history. It is an excellent destination for student travelers as this city presently finds itself fashionable in different aspects, without abandoning any of its rich history. Check out the nineteenth-century basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde where you can get a wonderful view of this beautiful city. Marseille also offers great bars that double as ice cream parlors and fun around every corner. Don’t miss Marseille on your list of great places to visit.

Taking decent photography while you are traveling isn’t as hard as it seems. Even with a pretty basic camera, with a few technique tips you can turn your regular amateur photos into professional looking ones!

1. Simplify your photography: eliminate the junk and focus on the the big picture

2. Get as close as you can to the object you are snapping, to make the best use of your pixels

3. Remember the law of thirds: a photograph has life when the object is placed on a line splitting the picture into 1/3 and 2/3 dimensions in either direction (not centered)

4. Look for patterns and diagonals

5. Frame the object with something naturally around it, such as an opening of trees or a wall

6. Avoid white skies- they take away from the true object of the photograph

7. Try and have the source of light come from behind you (the photographer)

8. Use color and symmetry to your advantage

9. Take photos from a different perspective or point of view

10. Capture the true size of something by including something of another size in the picture (person with a cathedral door, for example)
