Sapporo, a beautiful island just north of Japan, is home to lovely greenery in the summer and even better snow in the winter. Recently populated, Sapporo sports many new attractions and leaves behind a lot of the traditional Japanese culture, although a short trip can take you to some historical parts. Sapporo has many things to offer like parks, museums, gardens, and mountains. Come have a picnic in Sapporo and get ready to have a great trip.

Things to do in Sapporo
This island has many things to do and see! Any beer drinkers out there? The Sapporo Beer Museum, next to the Ario shopping center and run by the Sapporo Brewing Company, offers free guided tours, noting the history of the beer and the brewing process. At the end of the tour you can taste all of the different beers for a small fee. The Moiwa Mountains, which overlook the city, are a great place to spend a night watching the city lights with a special someone. They can be reached by car or cable-car. Pack a picnic basket and head over to Asahiyama Koen, a beautiful flower garden and park that overlooks the city center. It is renowned for its beautiful cherry blossoms in Spring and the foliage in the Fall.
Nightlife in Sapporo
Grab a dance or drink in Susukino, south of the city center, and see how much fun you can have in one night. As one of Japan’s largest nightlife district, Susukino is known to have a somewhat bad reputation for it’s gang involvement but is definitely safe for travelers not looking for trouble. Some great spots include O’Neills Irish Pub, Leibspeise-Otaru Beer, TK6, Paul’s Cafe, and Wine Bar Giulio Vierci.
Dining in Sapporo
Sapporo is famous for hairy crab, available at many seafood restaurants. It’s also known for it’s Miso Ramen, a tasty noodle dish. The best places to try these foods are at Aji No Tokeidai, Ramen Yokocho, Sapporo Beer Garden, Romantei, and Hiraku. Remember to bring chopsticks!
Shopping in Sapporo
The best souvenir to get in Sapporo is the ubiquitous Shiroi Koibito “White Lovers”. This chocolate slice sandwiched in between two wafers is a favorite among guests and their families. Sapporo has many souvenir shops around the city where many different things are available for fair prices.
Sapporo travel tips
- Booking flights in advance are good as many people fly the route to Tokyo.
- There are “One-Day cards” for the subway making it the best bargain.
- Japan is known to have very different food from the West. Make sure to ask about certain food allergies.
