Things to do in Dakar
One of the must see places to go in Dakar is the Ile de Goreee. It’s a small island just off the coast that will provide a relaxing atmosphere where you can enjoy snorkeling and beauty in a historical setting. If you’d rather stick to the beaches on the mainland then head to the Place de N’gor. It’s one of the best beaches around and hasn’t been hit by the pollution as some others have. The Grand Mosque is another impressive structure located right in the heart of Medina. Visit on Fridays and listen to the afternoon call to prayer. The CaroCola is a unique place to see some authentic African art sold by local artists. If you want a different kind of art area, then head to the IFAN museum. The IFAN is one of the best museums in West Africa and the imaginative displays are bound to impress you.
Nightlife in Dakar
Dakar has quite the nightlife–some say its the best in West Africa. Many clubs and bars are packed by 11pm on every day of the week. One of the hippest bars in Dakar is the Ozio. The Ozio has great people, great music, and the drinks aren’t too expensive. For some local jazz check out the Keur Samaba which has become increasingly popular. However, there is no doubt that Club Thiossane is the spot for World music fans. It’s owned by the legendary Youssou N’Dour and this club is always bumping. For those that would like a bit more to do besides dance, listen to great music and drink, the Casion Du Cap Vert is a popular and stylish casino en route to the airport.
Dining in Dakar
By far one of the most popular places for students is the fast food chain Adonis, which will always serve up an excellent Shwarma. The Casion Terrou-Bi is right on the sea and is highly recommended for French cuisine. It’s a bit expensive but the food is well worth it. For some local Senegalese specialties, you should check out the Keur N’Deye. Keur N’Deye offers dishes for vegetarians as well and on most nights there will be a griot playing the kora.
Shopping in Dakar
The Institut Francais is a major outlet for the popular clothing line of Madam Samba. These clothes are locally sewn and woven and will give you an insight to some of the local fashion and style. The Marche des HLM is the filled with African fabrics, shoes, and bags. It’s one of the best places around if you’re looking for African cloth. The Marche Sandago is the incredibly long row of street stalls that sell everything and everything. Be careful of your belongings here though, as crime can be high.
