Cairo is Egypt’s capital and Africa’s largest city. Since the Arabian Nights, this city has been on the map, and as a popular tourist destination in more recent centuries. The enormous, almost other-worldly pyramids draw visitors from all over the world, though the city itself has grown in size and international importance as the years have passed. Nicknamed “The Capital of one thousand minarets,” there are actually thousands of mosques in Cairo and many other historical and mystical things to see in this exotic city.

Things to do in Cairo
The key to sightseeing in this city is that there is a distinct and fascinating history behind all of the sights. The Pyramids of Giza are a fixture in the landscape of the remarkable city. Built between the years 630 BC and 1530 BC, these amazing pyramids weigh approximately 2.5 tons each. It is easy to see why this landmark draws millions of visitors every year. A Falucca on the Nile is a nice break from the city air. Here you can rent an ancient sailing boat by the hour and enjoy soaking up the sun. Islamic, or Medival, Cairo is where the majority of the ancient mosques are located. The Mosque of Mohammed Ali, the nineteenth century ruler, can be found here as well. Don’t miss out on the Citadel or the Pharaonic village while here too.
Nightlife in Cairo
Although Egypt is a Muslim country, there are several establishments which serve alcohol to tourists. Though generally you will see many locals sipping soft drinks all night. After the sun goes down, people come out and are ready to party. The city is actually busier in the night then it is in the day. Many clubs have areas for sitting and sipping drinks as well as belly dancers for entertainment.
Dining in Cairo
The food in Cairo has a lot of Islamic and Turkish influence. The main dishes consist of beef and lamb. Chick peas, figs, pita bread, hummus, dates, and honey cakes are all typical foods in this region. Try a local, authentic restaurant to get the full experience of Egyptian Cuisine.
Shopping in Cairo
In the main districts of Cairo, there are street vendors and carts everywhere. Be mindful of your money and purse when dealing with these vendors. Some of the lovely authentic items include colorful fabrics, paintings, musical instruments, and dance costumes. Remember to bargain, bargain, bargain!
Cairo travel tips
- Visit in the cooler months, usually between November and March, since the summer can be very hot.
- Bring a high SPF sunscreen since there is limited shade, and lots of sun!
- Ask your hotel to recommend a taxi service, because the local taxi drivers are known to overcharge tourists.
