Mac vs. PC

Mac vs. PC

For the majority of my life, I have to say I was an avid PC fan. Apple computers seemed inconvenient since most people didn’t work with their operating system. However, after buying my first laptop computer (an HP PC), I was left craving a Mac.

Since most PCs use the Microsoft operating system, it means that there’s a huge variability in the quality of a standard personal computer. My standard student laptop basically accomplished everything I expected it to: it got me online and did basic word processing, but anything beyond that became too much. It had a small RAM, so I constantly needed to cut back my storage of photos and music, and the battery life quickly went from over 5 hours to under 5 minutes. Now, I’m not saying that all PCs are terrible; there are countless IT professionals who will support PCs like HP and Dell to the end of the Earth. I’m just saying that you really need to do a background check on the system you’re considering purchasing before you take the plunge and actually buy your computer.

With Apple Macs, on the other hand, you can rest assured that your computer is going to be of a certain quality. I’ve had my current Apple laptop for over 3 years now, and the battery life can still last me an entire day, and I have yet to run out of memory space. Also, my initial worries about encountering compatibility problems when interfacing with PCs was quickly subsided when I realized that the majority of basic Microsoft software (like Office and Adobe products) all had a Mac version.

All together, Apple’s consistency, reliability and prestige (in desktop and laptop computers along with iPads, iPhones and iPods), have fully converted me into a supporter. I usually think of Macs as the Starbucks of computers: they can be a bit more expensive than instant coffee, but you know you’re going to get a good quality drink, no matter which new flavour you choose.
