What sports teach you about life
The wide world of sports can cover a wide range of aspects of life, including being a great way to learn about ourselves. Competitive sports from youth and intramural events to professional sports aren’t just about coming out on top and being successful, they can be a difference maker in an individual understanding their abilities as well as their limitations, and the impact they can make with a team.
Whether you’re eight years old or preparing to be sent off into the real world after college, there’s no doubt the opportunity exists for some competition in your life outside of the time you dedicate to academics. Joining a local recreational sports league can give you a really deep experience, and it’s better to get started on something like that while you still have the time.
One of the best parts of playing in a sports league on a regular basis, especially in the summer, is the exercise. No longer will you have to set aside your own personal time to get outdoors, most leagues include a practice schedule and you’ll have the opportunity to not only get into better shape but do so with others.
Team unity is perhaps the most critical part of success in any sport, and it’s clearly the biggest benefit of playing. As a professional you need to be able to work with a team, and have chemistry with your colleagues. That same notion applies to the playing field, whether it’s basketball, baseball, or even sports for individuals like golf. Getting to know one another and learning about each others’ experiences creates an entirely new social dynamic for your life. You’ll meet different types of people with various backgrounds all with a reason for being a part of the team or league.
And while you might not become best friends with everyone you become acquainted with through sports, the experience is worthwhile because it teaches you more about yourself. The way in which you’re able to both communicate as you get to know people and adjust to understanding different types of companions is an important part of growing up and surviving in the real world.
Picking the right sport to try is important to make sure you’re not making a bad investment as well. Most summer leagues have a solid registration fee, so be sure to look into potential student discounts in your home town. First and foremost, check online with your local recreational department to see leagues and teams being offered. If you played a little soccer growing up and want to give it a second shot why not go for it? Maybe you’ve never played softball before but would like to see what it is like, or maybe if you’re not big on playing out in the sun there’s a bowling league nearby. There’s always something available, no matter your age or athletic ability.
Of course there are still games to be played! No matter the significance of an event, winning is certainly something any team will strive for. Realistically though, sporting events can create depressing failures. So why bother going through such an experience? For the next game. For the day after the tough loss when you are able to go back out there and be the best that you can be. That mentality can come from any type of sport and it is perhaps the most valuable ability to be gained when it comes to facing all of the challenges in our daily lives. We are taught that being the best we can be only goes as far as our individual belief in our abilities, and sports provides the playing field for our success.
