How to Eat Well at College
Everything about college and being a college student is a recipe for unhealthy habits. The late nights, the fried food, ramen, and more coffee than considered healthy, there is little hope for maintaining a healthy diet. Luckily for you, here are a few tips to keep you on track during your four years without losing any of the fun!
Up late studying?
Instead of choosing ramen or some instant mac and cheese, instead opt for some baby carrots and hummus, or maybe some pretzels and peanut butter. These options are just as delicious, and have far less calories and sodium, and fill you up so much more than either ramen or mac and cheese would.
Don’t ignore the salad bar!
Yes, the burgers and ice cream both look fantastic, but take a peek at your school’s salad bar! Spring is a great time to indulge in fresh fruits and veggies, and to make your plate as colorful as possible. Instead of heavy creamy dressings, try out a vinaigrette or olive oil on your salad, it will taste lighter, and will be hundreds of calories lighter.
Going out to eat?
It’s one of the most prevalent social activities in college. Don’t miss out on the fun just because you’re trying to stay healthy! Simply order off the salad portion of the menu and skip the basket of bread if there is one. If you simply can’t ignore an amazing pasta dish on the menu, order it! Just be sure to only eat about half of what you’re given, portions in restaurants are not accurate portions for one meal.
Stuck at the Library?
On hour 6 at the library, and you know it will be a while until you can leave? Only option is the vending machine? Never fear! Typical vending machines actually have some options that won’t mess with your healthy lifestyle! Try peanut butter crackers if you are super hungry, the protein will fill you up, and for only around 200 calories. If you are hungry for just a snack, hopefully your vending machine has my favorite, Smartfood popcorn! This delicious treat is typically only 100 calories a bag and so delicious.
Thirsty?
Other than whatever libations you enjoy on the weekends, what you drink on a daily basis affects your mood, hunger level, and caloric intake. Instead of instinctually grabbing a soda when you feel thirsty, opt for some plain old water! So refreshing, and zero calories to boot! If you need a little spice in your life, try some of the many varieties of drink mixes to put in your water. These usually cost you about only 5 calories a packet, and taste just as though you are drinking real lemonade or punch!
With these tips, it will become second nature to choose the healthiest options at your school. The freshman fifteen will have nothing on you!
